AROTC 3rd Board

Does anyone have insight on the reasoning behind which schools that applicants are are awarded a scholarship to? I imagine that it depends largely on the size of available spots in the school’s ROTC program and a school’s ranking on the applicant’s preference list, but is it typically done by a first-come first-serve basis?
I am pretty sure it goes by your score. Higher scores= better chance of getting the schools you want.

Got it. Thank you!
I thought there may be some element of cost as well. Not that you wouldn't get one based on what schools you chose, but which schools they are awarded to. My DS was awarded to #1, #2 both private, and #3 in-state public.

Ah, that would make sense as well. I hadn’t considered that. Thanks!

Joel, to add on, from my experience as a former ROTC PMS and current JROTC instructor, Cadet Command generally approves the majority of scholarship transfer requests (probably 10 of 10 requests during my combined tenure) if you follow the process described in this post, especially since you have not been admitted to one of your schools. Think of the schools designated on your portal/offer letter as the Army's attempt to shape the cohort and ensure most ROTC programs have a equitable and healthy amount of potential contracts to start the year. The only time they may not support a transfer is if a school is getting close to filling its contract mission with scholarship offers. I have two former JROTC Cadets at VA Tech now on ROTC scholarships, so if you do request to transfer there, ensure you understand that the Corps/SMC experience will be much more intensive than a traditional ROTC program. It also helps to contact the ROO at the school you want to transfer the scholarship to and they should help you with the process.
I have just gotten my transfer request approved! Very excited right now.

MY DS was awarded his top 3 and they were all 3 the private expensive schools. He put in that order since if he needed to transfer the assumption is easier to transfer from $63K per year in tuition to a public school he had in spots 4-7.

It’s interesting. I mistyped actually and it was #1 SMC (private), #2 private, #4 in-state public. #3 was also SMC but not awarded the scholarship.

I’d be really interested to know the method to how they select.

Two of my DS’s are private#2, #6 and the other OOS, #1. Oddly, I thought he’d be more likely to get his 3rd choice which was far less but it’s all good!
