Still anxiously waiting for the results of the final board selections for FY 23 Marine Option. Has anyone been contacted yet or know when the results will come out?

Results typically come out towards the end of the month.

End of March? Uuugh! Really puts summer planning and getting medically qualified as well as attending NSI into a crunch!

DS is still waiting as well. Seems like a lot to make happen between now and this Summer but I am sure it will all come together if it does happen.

My DD was told she very narrowly missed selection in Nov. They selected 16 from the district and was told she was in the top 20. It would have been a huge advantage to make that first selection board for planning! Who knows if that was even true or just recruiter talk.

DS reached out to his Capt. early in February. Only info he received was the first board was highly competitive with minimal selections compared to what the 2nd board hands out. 2nd board would be Feb 14th and results would be "sometime in March". The Capt. felt better for his chances on the 2nd board but also said they received about twice as many new applicants as many wait until the deadline to submit.

Best of luck to the DD.

My DS was notified of his scholarship by the second board and we did have to hustle to get all his paperwork in so that he could go to NSI. It did work out, though. We went ahead and got him a sports physical and sickle cell test knowing that these would be required even before his DODMERB exam was scheduled. He ended up being DQ'ed by DODMERB less than a week before NSI but was able to attend because we had gotten the sports physical. He went through NSI successfully in June but his waiver was not approved until August. In the end we were hopeful this would be the outcome but we honestly did not know that he would receive waiver. So if there is any concern about timing, I would be prepared to act quickly to get the necessary paperwork together for NSI even without having everything else completed.

Thanks for the info JM and good luck to your DD as well USMC8995! My DS got similar info about the number of applicants in the second board but she also said the candidates on average were not as strong as the first group.

Some advice if you get selected. Time is short and the name of the game will be DoDMERB qualified. When you get your notification start working the medical piece immediately. You will need dates (and possibly records) for surgeries or other occurrences. My DS got the MO scholarship in the first board and we are still in the waiver process because he broke his nose 21 months ago and required sinus surgery which is an automatic DQ. They haven't even requested AMI yet. In addition to DoDMERB, NSI application requires shot records, sports physical, and Sickle Cell results. The NSI instructions said the sports physical was for the entire current school year and as I read it, that meant it had to be dated from last summer (2022). Our nice family doctor transcribed DS's sports physical from last summer onto the form the Marines sent him. Although very similar, I did not want to take a single chance of submitting an "unapproved" form. We also haven't heard back yet about his NSI dates/travel authorization. Check out DOD INSTRUCTION 6130.03, VOLUME 1 MEDICAL STANDARDS FOR MILITARY SERVICE: APPOINTMENT, ENLISTMENT, OR INDUCTION

Yeah I heard the medical piece is out of control with the system they can now use to look at any billable visit your DD/DS has ever had. Thankfully, I think my DD's record is fairly benign. Hoping to hear something soon. Thanks for the advice!

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Most states require sickle cell test results at birth. In Texas it's part of the newborn screening list. I found some NROTC guidance online that allows the use of those test results. I was able to request those from DS pediatrician (found them 18 years later) and submitted those results with his NSI paperwork.

I don't see anything requiring the physical to have been completed in 2022. The form indicates that a previous physical could be utilized but we just had DS go in and get a physical completed and had the DR complete the form.

The DoDMERB medical clearance is definitely a blackhole that can impact your DS/DD chances of getting awarded a scholarship or appointment so parents should be highly involved. Even clicking the wrong box on the form is a No/No as those cannot be undone and require explanation.

"To be medically eligible to participate in NSI, you must have a complete Preparticipation Physical (Sports Physical) signed by your primary care provider and you must be medically eligible for all sports without restriction during the current school year (15 August 2022 to present)."

You can interpret this as you wish. A sports physical could have been part of DoDMERBS exam but it wasn't so I interpreted this as them potentially wanting you eligible for the entire year. I am more than likely overthinking it but I err on the side of caution as I know the military well.

Getting a record of the sickle cell test from birth was such a hassle we just got a new one done. They wouldn't even confirm if they even had a record on file without a snail-mail written request and "allow four to six weeks for response".

So, I have DS waiting on second board result for NROTC-MO and have been following this chain and others on DODMERB process. My DS may have DQ issue which I hope will be readily waivable in the end, but if the waiver process takes as long as noted above - given where we are in the process, how does my DS make his college selection decision by May 1st (should he be notified that he is successful in the second board, yet before any waiver is issued?) His school is not yet determined as he is waiting on several regular decision announcement dates in late March.

His Capt. did call him after the second board with some follow-up questions that were encouraging, so we are trying to be thoughtful about what comes next if he is notified in mid to late March. The medical piece is no doubt something that he'll have to work on immediately.

My unqualified 2 cent advice would be to commit to his #1 school on his ROTC list. If his #1 school is not affordable without the scholarship then re-evaluate the order of schools so that he can attend the school he commits to regardless of the scholarship.

This would also be a good time to review the deposit policies of the schools you are looking at. Most of the time you can back out of an enrollment decision but you may lose your deposit. For my DS the school he ended up attending had a low deposit, which meant that if he had not gotten his waiver, I would not have been all that sad to lose the money in case he needed to head to his Plan B school. The DODMERB piece is time-consuming and the wait can be emotionally taxing. We did not get the unofficial word from BUMED that his waiver was recommended until we were 20 minutes away from dropping him off at school. The official word from USMC did not enter the system until a few weeks later. So, as many others on this forum have recommended, be well aware of what the potential financial impact of a denied waiver will be and be sure to have a contingency plan as to what you will do should things not work out. Even with that in place, the wait was tough even though the outcome in the end was positive.

Pick the school that you want to attend and can afford if something happens and you don't get or lose the scholarship. My 2 cents.

In case it helps based on experiences of the last 4 years, depending on the NROTC unit coordinator at your DS's future university, I would take the "semper gumby" - every flexible approach to summer training plans for the Navy/ Marines assuming your DD receives the national scholarship through the upcoming NROTC-MO board. For the last four years orders and travel plans typically came to my DS for summer cruises, NSI within 72 hours of departure. Sometimes you get advanced notice. and sometimes too those details shared say in June change at the very last minute. 2 summers ago one Midn arrived in Groton to join a sub only to be flown home the next morning, and flown back a week later to join a different boat. Semper Gumby.

If there are no issues I don't think the timing of the board decisions will put attending NSI into a crunch. NSI runs in 3 or so iterations and includes a session that ends in August. There will be time to complete DODMERB as long as no issues are found. *I do agree if issues are found they have less time to work them through though.

The way we've handled it so far is to proceed with summer plans for your family while assuming your DD may not be able to attend - buy only refundable tickets for her etc. And for all readers, avoid telling the navy you will not attend NSI because of your DD/ DS's cousin Goober's wedding, a long-planned trip to Europe, a summer course you already paid for, a job you "need", - that per those in the know, doesn't float. Midn's priority for the next 4 summers are NSI, Marine version of Cortramid, and 2/c 1/c cruises.

Oop - gotta go make the donuts. Good luck to your DD - hopefully she'll receive good news in the coming weeks - thank you for her willingness and determination to serve.

If I already had completed a DODMERBS physical for USNA, I won't have to do another one for ROTC correct?

If you were qualified on your DODMERB physical and did not require a waiver then there won't be a need to redo anything. If you have any waivers pending, the people who review NROTC waivers are different from the ones who review. USNA waivers. Not sure why but it is what it is.

All still quiet on MO board results...I guess the point someone made about the academy being late has probably affected ROTC board. I would think that would have more of a significant effect on the Navy side since MO isn't guaranteed at USNA.
