Service selection sheets turned in for c/o 24!!

Just a couple of data points that you may find interesting - for last year's commissioning class (not source specific to USNA) there were 12-13% less Naval Student Naval Aviators and 25% less Marine Core SNAs (pilots) than the prior year. Good luck to all from USNA who will, relatively soon, learn about their service selections.

Congrats '24!

Is that Midshipmen selection stats or actually awarded stats?

Selection (er "Assignment" ) is just to Naval Aviation. Platform assignments are done at various phases of flight training process, and at least back in the day were done using a "quality spread" to avoid having the best aviators go to a single community. Also, " Needs of the Navy " and timing was often a factor, sometimes the Fleet needed rotary, sometimes they needed fighter pilots, so the number of seats varied with each class. That said, I don't think I ever heard of someone that wanted helos and didn't get it.

Wait till her mother finds out her daughter goes Marine and gets her choice. Then again she did meet her husband at TBS and I have some wonderful grandchildren. So all considered a great choice. May all get their first choice and good luck to all. Timing and the needs of the service has a great impact on aviation track.

Some have found out! Special ones. Pretty excited for a couple that I know about. No celebrating yet as ‘needs of the Navy’ and Semper Gumby and all, but it’s a nice little excitement appetizer for what’s around the corner 😱

I assume those are the pre-select nukes? What else pre-selects?

well stated. those entering aviation as a future aviator/ pilot are designated 1390 - Student Naval Aviators, earn their wings/switch to 1310- Naval Aviator. once earning the new designation, they have an eight year active duty obligation. The other folks, Naval Flight officers (SNFOs) start as student NFOs, earn their wings and then become NFOs, have a six year active duty obligation.

If you search for a site called wives of the armed forces (dot com), you may as you wish find an unofficial article called How to Navigate the Navy Flight School Pipeline - I am not the author, did not vet the rest of the site, and it's not official so I won't post a link here - but as a heads-up, I found it informative on the stages of flight school and community selection.

I'll add this - there is a newer program in it's infancy, being tried that would allow those interested in serving as rotary wing helo pilots to take a different path in training that may end up being slightly faster/ may skip components of NIFE, thereby getting them an opportunity to wing/ start the clock on their service faster too. Some new Ensigns are buckling in for several months of delay before they start NIFE. I can see the appeal of jumping the line for those who get to know the mission and airframes of rotary wing craft. Not sure if this program of jumping the line will survive but current SNAs who haven't started flight training can identify themselves for this route if they are interested.

To add for the rotary thing, they're still testing it out and only took like 30ish people for the first wave. The first wave of it didn't get to skip the NIFE line and had to do flight phase too. That program is facing some delays itself though...

There might be another rotary-only program though? I'm not quite sure

... great info on rotary wing initiatives.
I think DS was tracking this before Protramid. His academic adviser is a pilot. I asked him about fixed wing and he looked at me like I'm eating a sun-dried, salted iguana (culinary acquired taste). He mentioned that there's another Mid in C/O 26 interested in rotary wing. Both adviser and classmate are from our hometown.

DD1 sent an email describing how her whole boat (submarine) is now waiting to see what DD2 will get for service selection.
Will she finally break the mold they ask and be a pilot; or will that pesky eye exam and its outcome deliver three for three submariners?
It's all fun and exciting as we countdown to November 16th and service selection.

RE: Intel Service Assignment.

Back in 2020 DD was chasing one of 2 (?) Direct Intel Assignments for PQ Mid’s. I understood that competition for those two slots was pretty stiff she worked hard for it and sweated it out to the end.

When I was last in DC visiting with DD she said she had just been out to USNA to talk with Mid's assigned direct Intel. There was the Usual NPQ majority, but there were also 6 PQ Mid’s going direct Intel in USNA CLASS of 2023. Way better odds.

Good luck to all you parents who’ve supported your DDs/DS’s along the way. Sure your proud of what they’ve done. You understand that whatever the result of SS they’ve made a great start to their adult lives. Still, you want this for them as much or more than anything you’ve ever wanted for yourself. I get it! and hope they all get what they want/worked for.

Less than a month

Talked to my Mid last night and it’s apparent, the excitement that is in the air. Several Mids in the room, all happy and cheerful. Like a party atmosphere.

Shortly, they will find out about their new ADULT life. Where they will live. If they will be near/on/under/over water. Marine or Navy. Their outcome of their 4 years at USNA.

SO EXCITING!

If course we were also talking thanksgiving, army navy, and a sweet vacation during semester break. So it could have been that….😆😆

It is a great time of year!
