    USMA Plebe Parent weekend 2024

We’re taking sibs (14 & 16) but they won’t attend the banquet. They can have a pizza night while we attend with our cadet. DS will either come home with us (although we too won’t be on break anymore) or he will head out on an adventure (he’s still working on those plans). Either way, he’s...

Where to stay for R day

We stayed in Fishkill for R day 2023. Not a bad drive and my CC was happy to have a little distance from post to calm his nerves a bit. For A Day we stayed in an Airbnb in Ft Montgomery. Very close which made picking up our Plebe convenient. Also, the kitchen was nice bc “in public” anything was...

    Why USMA?

This wasn’t entirely true for my DS. He was/is interested in pursuing human intelligence. The only path for that at USNA was if he somehow ended up with on a path with limited commissioning qualification (ie an injury that wasn’t DQ but limiting). Otherwise, while technically “offered” at USNA...

    Why USMA?

DS did 2 CVWs at USNA and then SLE at USMA. First CVW was a bust — mid he was assigned to didn’t want him there and left him alone in the room the entire time. 2nd CVW was great — the mid was awesome and really gave him an up close view of USNA. SLE was awesome too — it’s a week long recruiting...

Taxis/ride shares/rental cars near train stations

According to some OG moms, you can take the train to Peekskill and get enterprise to pick you up there and take you to their cortlandt office. We’ve kicked the idea around for random visit times, but I’d definitely recommend checking all the details before choosing that option. Would I do any...

    Travel Bag?

A duffle with backpack straps for RDay is good. They end up carrying a LOT of stuff throughout the day so being able to carry it on the back is nice. DS used a 59L (not full!! only filled to about 50L) eagle creek duffle. That’s what he now uses to travel back and forth from post to home.

    What to mail

Yes. My NC was short bandaids and ended up with bloody knuckles and zero time to get them at the cadet store so I sent a few in one of the letters I sent. Be sure to send anything during beast in an envelope or small box that can fit in the PO Box. No big packages.

    Calc 2 opinions

Thought I’d post a follow-up in case it helps others later. DS spoke with his professor who encouraged him to stay in the class. We, as parents, left the decision solely up to DS and said we’d support his decision completely. He opted to stay, worked his tail off studying, visiting office hours...

    Calc 2 opinions

AP isn’t an option for us. Calc1 was a junior college course (Calculus1 for Engineers or something like that, can’t remember the course number). He finished it Dec 2021 (with this same professor) with a high A average.

    Calc 2 opinions

Matriculating in 2023. He’s a current 11th grader in HS. Class of 2027 for USNA purposes. Apologies for the confusion.

    Calc 2 opinions

I know no one will have a definitive answer on a course of action for this but I’m hoping to get some seasoned opinions. DS (class of 2023) is currently taking Calc2 at a local junior college. Despite breezing through Calc1 with a high A, this current course is proving more challenging. It’s...
