Hello everyone. My daughter was recently awarded a 3 year national scholarship. My question is this - on her scholarship application, she put down that she was going to be captain on her varsity lacrosse team this spring. She has decided not to do lacrosse as she has an internship in the afternoons. Is this something to be worried about as we stated on application but she has decided to do something else. Just wanted everyone’s thoughts as I realize points are given for being a sports captain etc….maybe I am over thinking.

Curious as to how she could designate that she COULD be captain on the application unless it was in an essay. More curious, why she would designate that when no one can predict the future. Not a comfortable situation to be in, morally, but not one that she can do anything about now. There are no more interviews to clarify her decision. I guess she can only choose more wisely in the future.

Don't be too hard on this girl. The application states flat out to fill out all your activities/awards through 11th grade and EXPECTED participation for 12th grade. As far as I'm concerned, she did nothing wrong. In fact, I am certain she is not the only student who ever changed plans about an activity halfway through senior year.

Bottom line is she's already boarded and scholarship is awarded. And IMO, a good internship is worth as much as a team captaincy. So, probably a wash from a board evaluation standpoint anyhow. Again, my opinion. I certainly would not worry much about it. I can't imagine she earned the scholarship on the back of one team lacrosse captaincy in senior year.

Shouldn't be an issue. I encourage all my applicants to check the block if they expect to be a sports captain in the spring (or fall if they start their application in time for the first board. In my mind, that is an honest mistake. If she had not been awarded the second round scholarship she should have gone in and unchecked that box. I also recommend that if an applicant does check that "future" block that they address in one of the essay blocks that they anticipate being selected.

Thanks for the response as she would have been captain if she played (being a 3 year varsity athlete). She just lost desire to play in February after she applied.

At our school, the captains are chose usually at the end of the season for the next season, so my son knew was going to be captain of his sports team for this coming spring an entire year ago. That's possibly what happened with this OP.

you are overthinking...kids change their minds. My DS is contemplating not playing his senior season of Spring VB. He is a captain. Getting college acceptances and Army ROTC on the horizon sometimes changes what is important to them. They start to move on. It happens. Also look at it this way...she didn't get credit on her application for the internship she now has. It balances out.

Overthinking, imo.

And perhaps a smart decision as she won’t get injured from playing. It happens all the time.

I suspect she is an outstanding candidate. That wasn’t awarded a scholarship only bc of this. And wouldn’t loose it only bc of this.

Congrats!!
