USNA family coming to USAFA next October for the Navy-AirForce football game.

Arriving on Wednesday night and departing Sunday morning.

Younger son is interested in touring the academy on either Thursday or Friday prior to the game. Never having been to Colorado we would also like to do some local outdoor activities.

Looking for suggestions on best place to stay. Would prefer a hotel somewhat near a downtown area, restaurants, etc.

Any recommendations for an area to stay in is appreciated.

I almost always stayed at The Drury on Interquest Drive. It is only a couple exits from North Gate and has tons of restaurants within walking distance or very short car rides. It also has free breakfast every morning and free happy hour every night that you could actually use as dinner. If you ask for a south facing room you can watch the airfield from your room and see the powered flights and loads of gliders flying.

This is where I take my JROTC cadets when we go visit the academy. The "available meals" in the hotel (huge breakfast, nice 5pm chow down) are a money saver for them...but there's so much more within walking distance.

And they love to just go and spend hours in Scheels...

Other posters may have more experience with specific hotel names but from what I discovered visiting Colorado Springs is the USAFA appears to be a 25 min drive from the area they call Old Town which is also I believe the downtown area. Close to the Academy is an area of newer development with plenty of hotels and restaurants. We found this area had many cadets families when we shopped or went out to eat. We enjoyed staying in Old Town and found many restaurants and coffeehouses in that area. The Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak are two of the best known sights in the area that you’ll hear about.

We like to stay near Garden of the Gods because it is pretty central. However, Colorado Spring is super easy to navigate, so I don’t think that where you stay is as important as other cities. We have our favorite restaurants in different places around the city (including an omelet place up near Interquest Parkway) so we are always close to one and driving a few extra minutes to the others.

Scheels is the main attraction😍

Any of the hotels on Interquest are only a 10 minute drive to the North Gate of USAFA. There are plenty of restaurants nearby. I second the recommendations for the Drury Hotel.

The Drury is close, is a great value with free breakfast and afternoon snacks and it is in the same parking lot as Scheels (Sporting Goods Disneyland) and the Colorado Brewing Company (great happy hour). The Courtyard Marriott is right next to it and is newer so there is that option too.

Make sure you make reservations for CO Brewing Company. Some of us tried to go on a whim at FVE and it was over an hour wait

If you have time, Manitou Springs is worth visiting. It's a neat little town just a few miles to the west of Colorado Springs. Also, the COG Train to the top of Pikes Peak is definitely worth doing.

And the Manitou Incline if you need a challenge!
