Just a question for the BGOs on the thread:

Is it common to see those storied "I got my appointment three days before I-Day" appointees? I always heard about them, but I don't recall meeting any of them. Most of my classmates got in during the winter/spring, with some late fall LOAs sprinkled in. That said, we never really talked an incredible amount of how we got into USNA, since that was a battle fought and thankfully won and we had other things on our plate.

Not really common as they are really onsie-twosies if they happen at all in some years.

June 22nd! My Firsties year, our friend was pulled from the waitlist on June 22nd! And that’s the latest I’ve ever seen on the forums. Now about to graduate.

That was in 2020. 1st yr of COVID. Idk if that had any impact…it was a STRANGE year 😷. It was a staggered reporting for Iday, and my guy reported the following Tuesday, middle of the pack. This person pulled would have reported Monday. So that is one week notice prior to reporting…..which feels like days when getting everything ready in that timeframe!

Talk about a shocker 😳, for both parents and student!

Thanks much!

All we know is our MoC doesn’t rank their slate. We’re right smack dab in the middle of the REAL home of the Army-Navy Game, so both schools are highly visible to all of our HS students throughout the region.

Break out the Magic 8 Ball & Ouija Board (I’m dating myself, I know!) 😎
Philly?

Magic 8 ball was in full effect last cycle. I resurrected it in the waiting thread for the newbs for this cycle. Hasn't taken off like last year. ;)
By chance I ran across an actual Magic 8 ball in a thrift shop last weekend. Asked about the chance of seeing an appointment for DS soon, flipped it over, and the words "Signs point to yes" materialized through the dark blue... So we shall see. heh

I never had a candidate come off the WL, let alone at the last minute. First, whether anyone comes off the WL depends on yield for that year. A handful of candidates may be “left waiting” well into June, usually b/c USNA is waiting to see if some last-minute medical issues clear. It’s very, very rare not to hear by early June.

My own came off the WL May 11th. For perspective.

This was the only one I was thinking of. That was posted on the 2024 appt list as a really late surprise. I think that was also the year the one appointee was uninvited in mid June due to social media posts.
I do think there are likely more late ones with the DODMERB schedule changes (ie getting physicals later in process now) causing more late waiver decisions. But, no real proof to that theory, other than there are more WL appointees based on the yearly threads.

You cannot compare one year to another. There are some constants and some variables.

Constants
  • USNA always creates a WL and it is "real"
    • For many colleges, the WL is (literally) a way for applicants (especially legacies) to feel better about being turned down
  • USNA does not tell candidates (or BGOs) their place/order on the WL
  • WL appointments come after May 1 and usually (but not aways -- see above -- after May 15)
  • USNA wants to completely fill each incoming class but is legally prohibited from taking more than the allocated number of students in each class
Varies Year to Year
  • Whether ANYONE is appointed off the WL (this depends entirely on yield -- if the number of acceptances of appointments is equal to or greater than the number of available slots, no one will come off the WL; the lower the yield, the more people will come off the WL)
    • There have been years when no one is taken from the WL, though this is rare
  • How many will be appointed from the WL
    • If yield is high, few (if any) come off the WL
    • If yield is low(er than expected), more will come off the WL
  • When someone is appointed from the WL
    • If yield is low [it rarely is], USNA may start taking people from the WL earlier in the process
    • If yield is high, USNA may not take WLers until June
  • When WLers are sent turndowns
    • If yield is high, turndowns happen earlier vs. yield is low
  • Whether you can be appointed to Foundation or NAPs from the USNA WL
    • It has happened; it is very rare

I get the yield part in general and how it affects WL. But, for a given MOC's slate. If the calculated slate winner is still awaiting a waiver on April 15th, what happens?

My assumption would be that #2 (assuming fully qualified) is placed on WL, and if #1's waiver is denied, that #2 comes off WL regardless of place on WL. I can't imagine if there is a fully qualified candidate on a slate that no one is picked up that year just because the 1st one was denied. This example would be for the districts where likely only 1 is taken per slate.

You are confusing the National Pool with the Wait List. Qualified nominees on an MOC slate who do not receive an appointment are sent the National Pool, where they compete with others from around the country for additional appointments. There are literally thousands in the National Pool. This happens before April 15.

The Wait List (WL) is made up of candidates whom USNA considers very competitive for an appointment but who have fallen victim to the "numbers game" (too many great candidates for too few slots). This is determined on April 15. There are usually 50-150 on the WL. There are over 535 MOC slots (additional for Puerto Rico, DC, etc.). Not every #2 goes to the WL. And, we are told that people are taken off the WL based on competitiveness, not geographic location.

In your hypo, let's assume that -- AFTER April 15 -- #1's waiver is denied or, for some other reason, #1 can't show up on I-Day. USNA would go to the WL. There may not be anyone from #1s district on the WL and, even if there were, USNA isn't required to take that person, if s/he is not as competitive as other WL candidates.

In that case, the slot would go unfilled for this year. That MOC would have an additional slate next year. This is why USNA makes most waiver determinations before April 15. There are typically a small number (usually people waiting X months post surgery for medical clearance) who do extend beyond that.

This morning portal updated to turned down, no email yet. Is there still a chance for NAPS or is this the end
Unfortunately, no. Turned Down means from all programs.
