Current Self Prep at Marion Military Institute- ask any questions!

Nice response and we all send best wishes. However, probably best to be anonymous in your postings ... just a suggestion.
Was supposed to be a PM. Opps. Can't figure out how to delete. But not really concerned. Anyone can contact me.

Phoebem, so sorry to hear that you did not get in, best of luck on your future endeavors. Thank you for your insight to MMI, it has been very helpful. My son was deferred from EA to RA and then was rejected on Monday. We are planning to attend the Preview Day at MMI on 4/5, so he can make his final decision for next year
You will probably see me then! I am on battalion staff so I am easy to find in the PIR at 1200 formation! I am the last in the staff line! Come find me if you have any questions! I could also be walking around with a camera too.

Sorry to hear this. I know precisely how you feel. We went through 2 years of rejections with my son prior to him attending MMI for round 3, last year.
He is currently excelling as a Plebe at West Point.
In the end, he actually told me he was "glad I didn't get in until after I went to Marion".
At MMI last year, he worked incredibly hard, and joined 3 extra curricular clubs and made Swamp Fox. He received Appointments to USMA, USAFA, and USCGA.
And then had to make a gut wrenching decision.....for USMA.
MMI had Caden very much in tune and completely confident upon arrival on Rday last June.
One of the added bonuses was that he went to WP with 14 very close friends from MMI, who have been an amazing support system for each other during this difficult Plebe year. At Rday, his company Cadre made Caden 'Guidon Bearer' for H2, for the first half of Beast, before they went out in the field. (AKA 'Flag Guy') Apparently he showed up displaying leadership and knowhow to earn that.
MMI will offer EXCELLENT support for the re-application process that Self-Preps go through. Colonel Bowen is the Real Deal, when it comes to this stuff! West Point Grad himself, and super well connected with all the Service Academies. I highly recommend reaching out to him, if you haven't already. He is very very helpful, and will take into account your particular situation. I honestly can not imagine anyone more qualified at this stuff. When i first called him, and told him we were from TX-26 district, he knew off the top of his head, our Rep Michael Burgess, and his Service Academy Committee Coordinators name before I could tell him. Had had plenty of interactions with them previously. I was stunned, to say the least....
Prior to Caden attending MMI, during his attendance at MMI, and even recently while Caden has been at West Point, Colonel Bowen has always made himself available for consultation. (Quite easily, I might add).
While there are obviously no guarantees, and incredibly hard work will be required, you will have enormous objective advantages at MMI for SAP (Service Academy prep). Insider info/connections. (Caden's admissions officer at West Point had already heard about him prior to his interview). Professors who are professionally experienced in writing evals/recommendations. (No need to seek out your prof at State U and hope they care enough to help). Expert assistance with essays, etc...
Anyhow, wishing you guys the best! And, Do Not Give Up! They love determination and persistence. A ton get in every year to all the SAs who are reapplicants.
Feel free to reach out
...

Best Wishes! -Bill Roesner (Son Caden)

Caden and I were in the same physics class last year at MMI!

PhoebeM, I'm sorry. I've followed your posts from the beginning. Wishing you the best in whatever your choose and wherever your journey takes you. You're going to do well. Good luck!
Thank you! I will be going to Florida Atlantic University to get my bachelors and will still be pursuing a coast guard commission through CSPI first and if that doesn't work out, then I will apply for a DCO because my degree is a STEM degree (Biology). And if that doesn't work out then I will most likely enlist or maybe look into NOAA or Florida Fish and Wildlife more. MMI has definitely helped me to become a better version of myself and build leadership skills. I do not regret my time here at all and I have built relationships that will last a lifetime! I am so glad I came here before going to a 4 year school. It has prepared me well for the future no matter where I end up!

One of my son's very good friends will be attending Florida Atlantic University in the fall. It's a very good school! Good luck to you!

Im seriously considering MMI as a self prep for the SAP. What held me back was probably my test scores and leadership examples in the last application out of a private prep high school. I know there are no guarantees, but my cousin who attended MMI said just about everyone who worked their tail off was offered an appointment. If I attended MMI, received around a 1370 or higher on the SAT, and got a 4.0, would I likely be accepted to one of the following academies, USMA, USNA, USAFA. I know it might be a dumb question but it's pretty hard trying to pick between some pretty good 4 year colleges and the self-prep route. Just trying to find the best option for reapplication

also I'm pretty sure I could get nominated to at least two of those academies as my district isn't the most competitive

You sound a lot like my son was. Probably lacking in "leadership examples" just as you stated.
You will have very good opportunities to improve on your WCS (whole candidate score) at MMI. Including leadership opportunities. Corp of Cadets, etc. You'll have very objective advantages in gaining nominations and appointments to any and all of the Service Academies. Join as many clubs as you can when you arrive. Join ROTC. You'll actually only have to take the MS-1 coursework, due to Marion already having a corp of cadets/P.T., etc. Army ROTC is on the MMI campus and can get you a nomination for USMA. (More nominations the better). And for plan B, MS-1 is transferable to AFROTC, NROTC also.
All the Academies use MMI for sponsored Cadets, so they already have strong relationships there. You will have lots of opportunities to meet representatives from the Service Academies at MMI. Take advantage of these opportunities to introduce yourself. The professors at MMI are obviously VERY experienced with recommendations and evaluations that you'll need both with the Academies and your Congressional Reps. [Imagine yourself at State U, in classes with hundreds of other students, trying to get your professors to complete recommendations and evaluations. Now imagine asking for the same for ALL the Academies and Nomination sources. Not impossible, but not easy.....Could be problematic.....MMI is set up for this. Plenty of experience doing these things, because it's exactly WHAT they do!]
These are all HUGE advantages for gaining appointments.
My son worked incredibly hard at MMI and received appointments to all 3 of the Academies he applied to. USMA, USAFA, and USCGA.
He is currently a Plebe at USMA, where he has benefited considerably from his MMI experience. AND has had a built in support system with the other 14 Plebes from MMI he started with.
Do I think you will earn an Appointment? With the determination you sound like you have, YES! I believe in you, and I believe you will! Now go EARN IT!!!

Call Colonel Bowen at MMI. His contact info is on the MMI website. He's the real deal! Extraordinarily helpful and experienced. He's very easy to talk with, and very straightforward.

Thank you! I have already been in contact with LTC Bowen for a couple of weeks now.

FWIW I went to MMI 2019-2020. 1450 SAT. 4.0 GPA both semesters. Accepted to USCGA. Got nomination for USAFA but didn't get in.

My son has a TI-83 calculator. Is that going to be adequate for his needs next year or is there something different he needs to get?
Thank you!

My son will be attending MMI as a Self Prep student. After you pay the deposit for housing...what are the next steps- ? LTC Bowen has contacted him 2x by phone and 1x by email to touch base. He's super excited- he only wanted CGA but has decided to apply to all Academies this coming year.

Also- great forum...I want to get through all the questions and comments but work is getting in the way :)

I am not fully sure about the next steps, I would definitely keep in contact with LTC Bowen as your son will be getting his class list and what to register for from him.

Excellent outlook for your son! There are no guarantees,
and he'll really have to apply himself, and commit to an all out effort. But, rest assured,
good results will follow! MMI is an amazing place!!! Your son will be happy for the opportunity and experience.
Self-prep at MMI was the best decision we ever made for my son, who is now finishing up his Plebe year at West Point STRONG!
LTC Bowen for Man of the Year!!!😉

I'm the physics professor and math and science department head. In the chemistry, precalc, and physics courses we do not allow the use of graphing calculators on tests. Instead we require any non-graphing scientific calculator.

Personally, I recommend the TI-30XIIS. It allows you to enter the equation and see your entry.

Don't get rid of the TI-83. It's a great calculator for engineering and upper level science courses!

Thank you very much for this information!

Sir,

Asking due to your knowledge of MMI…is it possible to be a self-prep SAP Cadet and in the ECP simultaneously? (Trying to determine how much overlap in coursework…for all the backup plans.)

Your advice on all the boards is appreciated!
