Current Self Prep at Marion Military Institute- ask any questions!

My daughter is hoping to be one of the lucky ones to be sponsored if she doesn't receive an appointment. If not sponsored, she will be self-pay. When would we need to apply? When will she report? She is only interested in the SAP program.

It is very active and still running strong. I also know they intend on expanding the program. I was there in October when one of the students did a solo "fly over' in an MMI plane during a parade for Parent's Weekend. For me, it was as inspirational as a Stealth Bomber flyover. Where else does this happen? In my opinion, the opportunities at Marion Military Institute, beyond their excellent Service Academy Program, for students of different interests are unparalleled. Every high school graduate in America would benefit from spending a year or two at MMI. As an academic and leadership college, it may be the last of its kind of in America. MMI is a special place.

I would recommend contacting LTC Thomas Bowen, who directs the SAP. He is very approachable and responsive. This year's schedule is still up, I think, but they reported in early August. Some SAP cadets were also there in July for the AF Aim High Flight Academy and had the opportunity to go home for a week or so before reporting.

You could apply to MMI now. We paid a $200 or $300 deposit to hold his spot, once MMI admitted him. They will refund your deposit if your canidate gets an appointment in the end. MMI is a first rate institution with a very personalized manner of interaction with students/families.
Another reason to apply earlier is to get scholarship money, while it is still available. Most SAP students are strong enough academically to qualify for these awards. Very easily, I might add.
MMI was the best decision we ever made! They did everything they promised for my son, and much more! As a self-prep he worked incredibly hard, and with their expert support, he received Appointments to all 3 SA's that he applied to. He is currently a Plebe at USMA, and has had a built in super strong support system of the other 14 MMI SAP grads who started with him on RDay. He was incredibly ready for WP when he got there. And has declared that he is very glad he failed to gain appointments for 2 years, so that he could have the MMI experience prior to getting to WP.
I highly recommend reaching out to Colonel Bowen at MMI and explaining your situation. He is an extraordinarily helpful person, (USMA grad himself), and has dedicated himself to helping young adults receive Appointments. He is VERY GOOD at what he does. Self-preps, in particular, will need to show up and work incredibly hard, and there are no guarantees, but your Daughter will have a very real advatage in her Application process. From the day she shows up in very early Aug, the support she'll get is competent and thorough.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been thinking about you. My son was also waitlisted for USCGA. He's getting excited to start his experience at MMI. My son was deferred from EA to RA and then was rejected on Monday. We are planning to attend the Preview Day at MMI on 4/5, so he can make his final decision for next year

Sorry to hear this. I know precisely how you feel. We went through 2 years of rejections with my son prior to him attending MMI for round 3, last year.
He is currently excelling as a Plebe at West Point.
In the end, he actually told me he was "glad I didn't get in until after I went to Marion".
At MMI last year, he worked incredibly hard, and joined 3 extra curricular clubs and made Swamp Fox. He received Appointments to USMA, USAFA, and USCGA.
And then had to make a gut wrenching decision.....for USMA.
MMI had Caden very much in tune and completely confident upon arrival on Rday last June.
One of the added bonuses was that he went to WP with 14 very close friends from MMI, who have been an amazing support system for each other during this difficult Plebe year. At Rday, his company Cadre made Caden 'Guidon Bearer' for H2, for the first half of Beast, before they went out in the field. (AKA 'Flag Guy') Apparently he showed up displaying leadership and knowhow to earn that.
MMI will offer EXCELLENT support for the re-application process that Self-Preps go through. Colonel Bowen is the Real Deal, when it comes to this stuff! West Point Grad himself, and super well connected with all the Service Academies. I highly recommend reaching out to him, if you haven't already. He is very very helpful, and will take into account your particular situation. I honestly can not imagine anyone more qualified at this stuff. When i first called him, and told him we were from TX-26 district, he knew off the top of his head, our Rep Michael Burgess, and his Service Academy Committee Coordinators name before I could tell him. Had had plenty of interactions with them previously. I was stunned, to say the least....
Prior to Caden attending MMI, during his attendance at MMI, and even recently while Caden has been at West Point, Colonel Bowen has always made himself available for consultation. (Quite easily, I might add).
While there are obviously no guarantees, and incredibly hard work will be required, you will have enormous objective advantages at MMI for SAP (Service Academy prep). Insider info/connections. (Caden's admissions officer at West Point had already heard about him prior to his interview). Professors who are professionally experienced in writing evals/recommendations. (No need to seek out your prof at State U and hope they care enough to help). Expert assistance with essays, etc...
Anyhow, wishing you guys the best! And, Do Not Give Up! They love determination and persistence. A ton get in every year to all the SAs who are reapplicants.
