USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

... In my experience the kids I've seen who apply only to the academies, not ROTC, have other primary reasons. Maybe that's not your experience, and that's okay.
.
Give me some studies. Give me real numbers.

Where is your Narrative going from here?
.

Well my DS got declined 2 days ago and I thought he was going to simply proceed with plan B but he is now even more committed to go to his accepted college and re-apply to USNA.!

He had a 3.9 GPA, 1350 SAT and attended the Summer Seminar, 1 Nom of MOC.

What can he do to strengthen his application for next year Class of 2029

Thinking about it, that application goes in about just 7-8 months from now..

Thank you

I don't think I did that if you read my initial post.
"Yes. I said those who do both are the ones who clearly want to serve."

Seems like a pretty clear swipe to me. Have you ever thought that a 17 y/o might not want to have to choose between NROTC and NROTC-MO just yet? As you may know, once you choose one, it's pretty difficult (if not impossible) to switch. There also have been situations where someone is awarded an NROTC scholarship and then wants to reapply to Annapolis the following year, and things become "difficult" with the unit they are attached to. Keeping your options open when you will barely be 18 when you show up for your freshman year of college, is not quite the same as not having a clear desire to serve.

We can debate opinions all day long, sure, if I had the time. But what was your son's plan had he not be admitted or were you just so certain he would be? And you don't have to answer that because it's really none of my business. In my experience the kids I've seen who apply only to the academies, not ROTC, have other primary reasons. Maybe that's not your experience, and that's okay.
I only applied to USNA and NROTC. I was a basketball recruit for many schools. Some of those schools had NROTC, most did not. Ivies did not. Some schools have good relationships with sports and ROTC, many do not. One or the other gets a second seat. My back up was an Ivy with OCS after. I stated that in my interviews.

Yes, this is the same thinking we have for our DD. She is still waiting on NROTC for a scholarship decision (it really for an out of state school that provides R&B), but she does not need it because it right now does not provide R&B at her in state school. She is tuition exempt, so she does not have to a commitment to NROTC if she wants to reapply to USNA.

Sure, I'll try to be clearer. "Clearly" as in it's apparent the kid's main goal is to end up in the military, not just get into an academy. Believe it or not, there are actually kids out there like that. I've met and talked with and parents of those kids who are applying to an academy primarily for a sport or because it's free. I've also met kids who choose not to apply to an academy, but apply only ROTC because of the scholarship, not a primary desire to serve. And then there are the kids who have such a strong desire to serve that if they aren't awarded either an appointment or ROTC they enlist. But when a kid is fortunate enough to have taken the time to apply for both (and those applications are a great deal of effort), they should be allowed to take the time to consider them without being questioned about their desire to serve, which is what was happening here earlier. Hope that clears it up.

And it's not impossible to switch from NROTC to Marine Option. The units will work with kids who want to do that. But a great question for those kids going through the application process for their desired units.

One thing I have learned over the decades being involved in this… 17-18 year olds why are all over. Many give all the right answers, but it has nothing behind it. Heck I was one of those. I was excited to serve, but at 17, I really had so clue. I did my research and wanted to serve. I knew a guy who went to USNA because his parents promised a corvette. He is now a senior officer, still serving. Had multiple commands. Honestly at the end of the day I am more interested to their why after 2 for 7. They are more mature, been exposed to the fleet just a bit, they have lived the grind and have a much better picture of their future life. We even see on this forum kids who enlist with the purpose of a SA, is their service less honorable? Or the kid who signs up for the GI Bill? Does that make their service less admirable. Who has stayed and left the military after their commitments… you would be surprised how that all turns out.

I don't disagree with any of that, but it's a tiresome discussion every time someone on here posts about kids who may choose ROTC over an academy and then they are questioned on their desire to serve. It happens quite a bit. And this kid is just wanting time to think about it.

Once again, NavyHoops provides some much needed context.

Give these kids & mostly naive parents a break …. It’s not your right to discount how they choose to apply to SAs and ROTC based on your beliefs and your methods, and however you steer your kid.

Some folks will only drive a Ford, others will only drive a Chevy …

Our daughter has played Lacrosse from a very early age, and we would put her in Summer Lacrosse camps at the Naval Academy all throughout … and this is how she developed such a narrow myopic interest in the “The Naval Academy”

She applied to the Naval Academy, and she applied to my Alma Mater UVA. She received an appointment to the Naval Academy, and a Music & English scholarship to UVA ….

ROTC at UVA didn’t even cross my mind. I don’t even think DD or DW thought much about it either.

To my chagrin … DD chose the Naval Academy, and dissed my Alma Mater, UVA.

She loved the Naval Academy growing up so much so that she didn’t want anything else.

This is how “The Ball Bounces”

Life really is a box of chocolates …

We all have the stories of our children's journeys, and they are are incredible and interesting. But the last time I checked you don't get to dictate my rights.

Yep … and this thread is Anchored in the Naval Academy Fan Section !!!

Please take the service at any cost Narrative to some wider vehicle …. It doesn’t belong in the Academy Fan section.

Can someone post a pic of your portal? DS says Pending Review Withdraw at the bottom. Is that where we should be looking for a change? Or should I be seeing something somewhere else?
Well my DS is TD; before Wednesday at 2pm it said Pending Review Withdraw. You are still in it!;) it’ll go Complete ( instead of Pending) if you are getting an appointment; if it’s a Turned down, then it’ll go directly from Pending to Turned down! Good luck all and Go NAVY!!:)
