TWE: Thin White Envelope?

Thanks for answering. Are there other options in an effort to try again? Like prep schools elsewhere?

Did you or you DS/DD receive a TWE? They could go to one of the schools that the falcon scholars go to as a self prep.

But the letter didn’t mention the opportunity for the prep academy. Her ALO told her that the entry for prep academy was automatic if she got nominated but didn’t receive an appointment.

Dad2four, could you please clarify? From whom/where did you get the TWE informing you that she didn't get "nominated" and are you referring to a congressional nomination? What did it actually say and who sent it?

To go to the Academy Prep school you do not need a nomination!

Here is the link form the USAFA: You do not need a nomination to be considered for prep. https://www.academyadmissions.com/the-experience/prep-school/prep-school-admissions/

Now each Academy is a little different and we may need an ALO to weigh in here. At USMA specifically, you have to not be qualified in one area to be considered for prep and AOG Scholarships are awarded to qualified applicants who did not get a spot.

In terms of self-prep, there are tone of threads relating to the advantages and dis-advantages of doing it on your own. IMPO, a sponsored Civilian Prep School is a no brainer to accept but your daughter would be in a better place with attending a four year university and participating in ROTC than trying to do self prep. If you do not get in the second time, that year at part will need lead to any sort of degree.

Thank you so much for

Could you clarify what letter she received? A twe from her nomination source would not nullify her from continuing her application to USAFA in hopes of the prep school or foundation scholarship.
If she received a twe from the USAFA stating she did not receive an appointment but did not mention anything about the prep school she may still be considered.
Either way she could start looking at self prep at one of the outside prep schools.

Billberna, she received the TWE from the senator's office.

Thank you, DDmom, and all who have responded! The letter she received was from one of the PA senators. Part of the letter read, " While your application and credentials are very impressive, the Selection Committee did not recommend you for a nomination. I commend you for your outstanding accomplishments and wish you the very best in your academic career and in the pursuit of your future goals."

I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't devastated for my daughter. However, I know that where ever she lands it's going to be good. Blessed with too much talent and "want to", just like all of our kids who end up in the academies!

This is not what I believe to be the dreaded TWE, just a notification that DD did not get a nomination from your senator.

My DS got the same letter but then got a nomination from our MOC.

So, we are still alive, I hope this helps.

Is the TWE a "thanks but, no thanks" letter? Like, "nice of you to apply, but you ain't gettin' in"?

On an OLD appointment thread I saw "TWE to Appointment" so now I am double confused.

Care to help a NoOb out?
TWE is disappointing to receive. It's recommended that applicants have a solid Plan B. However, that TWE may turn into a USAFA Falcons Scholarship offers some weeks later.

Did your DD apply for a NOM to her US Representative? Did she get a NOM from that representative? If so, she is still in the game. The notice from the senator is just referring to senator's nom, not appointment to the Academy. Did she apply for the VP NOM? If so, again, she is still in the hunt. Until she receives an email/portal notification of denial from USAFA directly, she is still in the game. As others have said, even if she doesn't have a nom, she could still be considered for Falcon Foundation or USAFA Prep School. Have a plan B in place, but don't lose hope yet!

I am just today seeing your reply. Others have since written good advice to you. While true that you did not get a nomination from that one particular senator, there is still the possibility of a nomination from your representative, from the other senator, and from VP Pence. And even if you don't get any of those nominations (and you likely won't even know about Pence's) there is still the possibility of USAFA Prep School or a Falcon Scholarship to one of six specific prep schools nationwide (called appropriately by many a "golden ticket" to an appointment in the following year). I remember last year some here on this list had given up and forgotten about USAFA because they had no nomination and thought they had no chance...... and then a miracle occurred. At least four candidates in this forum got appointments through the VP nomination in late April! And there is still another nominating source - the superintendent of the academy can nominate 50 qualified candidates "at large", i.e. from anywhere among the list of qualified candidates to fill out the class. So don't lose hope if a senator did not nominate you. Our appointee didn't get a nomination from either of our senators and it didn't make a difference. Finally, when we talk on this forum about a "TWE", we are almost always referring to the "Dreaded TWE" that comes from Academy Admissions and that will show up in a candidate's online portal.

@dad2four her portal will show what nominations that she may have received. If she got one from someone else, it will show there. If you do not have a nomination, your chances are very slim that something out of the ordinary may happen. You can still hold out hope, but we would be doing you a disservice if we did not advise to start finalizing a Plan B or C. TWEs are difficult to swallow and many of us have experienced them with our children.

In terms of Falcon Scholarships, there are around 5o awarded each year through admissions so they are hard to get as well.

There are many threads out there that talk about self-prep or a four year college with or without ROTC.

Each one has advantages and disadvantages and you would need to evaluate what is best for your situation. If your daughter has a strong academic foundation and the maturity to do well on her own, a four year college with challenging classes and ROTC is probably a better fit. If she needs help with her academics, does not have great test scores or lacks the maturity to succeed on her own, the self-prep option my be a better fit.

Thanks, Falconchic88.

She's been encouraged in learning that there's still hope with the AFA. She didn't go through the other options for an appointment, but still has other options. Great volleyball player and excellent student, so there's a plan B, C, etc. She just wanted this. Best of luck to all our kids!
