Hello, I was worried about the CFA. My mile time is currently 7 minutes, and I am worried I won't be able to cut it down. Any tips? Does anyone know what the average time is?

Also...

What should girls on their period do?

Thank you.

The max is 6:30 or somewhere around there so 7 minutes isn't "slow".
Bring pads or tampons or whatever you use. If you're on your period during a water-involving activity, and you don't use tampons then just tell your squad leader and they should be able to opt you out of it.

Remember that, by its nature, the CFA tires you out. So, if you run a 7:00 minute mile without doing anything else prior, you are guaranteed to run a slower mile during the CFA. You still have 2 months+ before NASS. Suggest you practice the CFA exactly as it is described on the USNA website. That way, you'll be more comfortable doing the events in sequence.

To answer your question, a 7:00 for a female on the CFA mile is fine.

That's a good time for a female, and everything about the CFA can be found at USNA.edu.
Type CFA into the search box.

At NASS last year I got a 7:30 and my period, lol. My first two days are extremely heavy and I got it right smack in the middle of the week. If I remember correctly, they issue cinch bags and I would put pads in there. There was hardly any time to change so I had the heaviest ones possible. When I could change I would keep it discrete by literally putting the product in my underwear. TMI I know, but you gotta do what you gotta do and sometimes it wasn’t convinient to carry the bag around; this is something I wish I knew before going too. There were times when I literally didnt have time to walk to the bathroom and change after waking up because it was so go-go-go, so I would stay out of view of my roommates, change, and throw the dirty stuff in the trashcan. It was severely unpleasant but you’ll find a way. PM me if you have any other questions.

You’re gonna do fine in military life, if that’s what you choose. Adapt and survive. Do what you have to do to get done what you have to. It’s a routine bodily function, you deal as best you can and keep moving.

+1
By the way, if you get lucky, you’ll have a female squad/platoon leader willing to answer questions like these as well. I had a platoon leader who was incredible and took time out of her free time to have a platoon girls’ talk and she answered all of our questions, TMI or not.

For the period question: I agree with what others have said. When I went to SS there was also one night where there was a "gender talk". Basically, the guys and girls split up and got to ask the mids all the questions you've wanted to ask. Really take advantage of this because they are more than willing to answer all your questions. In fact, one of my biggest tips for NASS is to come with LOTS of questions. Mids are constantly asking to be asked questions that you have.

For the CFA question: It sounds like you will do well at SS with the time you posted. The Mids stress that the CFA you take at SS is not the end-all, be-all. You can keep retaking the CFA. Personally, I didn't like my scores at SS. I trained and just kept practicing. When I retook the CFA in November, I was able to max a couple events and improve my pull-ups from a 20 second hang to three pull-ups. So just do the best you can at SS, and then if you want better scores just keep practicing and retaking it.
