My Army ROTC status has changed from Board Ready, to Boarded/ Under Consideration. Is this where I want to be? I would have been on the last board but the PMS didn’t submit my interview until after the deadline.

It shows that your file has been reviewed. If you look at the bottom of your application status it will give you the definition for each status, now everyone just needs to wait and see if they are awarded a scholarship. Keep working your plan B and C options and Good Luck to everyone.

The PMS might have made it - they have a public deadline but it is usually a few days later on their end. Good luck!

Hello, My daughter is “under consideration” for this 3rd board; Army ROTC. Does her college choice affect the Board’s decision ? She selected Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, College of William & Mary, and James Madison University. Her major will be French.

How are females selected as part of the 4 year ARMY nation wide ROTC scholarship? What is the selection % for female applicants?

I have a daughter who is a current junior (MS3), I have never heard of gender being a factor, and I do not know the breakdown of applicants (gender specific) or awardees. The OML should be gender blind, especially in the current state of affairs being that all jobs are open to both genders depending on job specific abilities (for example combat arms like Infantry has an additional fitness test that must be past).

Good luck to your daughter, I remember the waiting game a few years back, it is tough. Hopefully she will get good news soon, if not, she can attend any of the schools she has applied to and register for MSL classes and participate in ROTC. It is also possible to earn a campus based scholarship. Keep us posted.

I missed this question earlier, no, it should not. The offers are made based on the OML (Order of Merit List). So after the 3rd board the number of scholarships will be determined and they will make that many offers down the list. There will be fewer 4 year offers than the first two boards and the majority of 3rd board recipients will be 3 year offers, but definitely not all. The way it does affect it is if she has been awarded a scholarship, they will look at each of her schools in order and see if there is a spot available for her at each school. They will continue down the list until 3 schools are selected, or the list is exhausted. So there is the off chance that none of the schools are available, then I believe that is how the school choice would affect her having an offer or not. My daughter was a nursing applicant, much fewer slots at each school, and after the 3rd board she was given her 1st, 3rd and 4th choices to choose from. We were surprised that she ended up choosing what had been her 4th choice. She was awarded a 3 year advanced designee scholarship, which meant the freshman year was not covered. The fourth choice school covers room and board all 4 years for 3 year AD recipients, so that helped that first year, plus she was able to use the merit scholarships to the school that first year. She will be graduating and commissioning next May.

My daughter was just awarded a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship. She will either be at VMI or JMU, for her Plan B. Studying Biology and Pre-Med Minor. Wishing your DD the best of luck!

Dckc88, Thank you for responding and sharing your insight. I would have thought that each Board would have its “fair share of allocation” with regards to 4 year scholarships.

For my clarity: There is no “separate gender OML” for female candidates ? Across the Service Branches, female offices are only about 10%.

I had thought that 3 year Scholarships were only given at the local level (by PMS). Since this pot of money / surplus was usually coming from “winners” that decided to enter West Point or other Service Academies.

I had thought “linguist” were highly coveted by the Army and other Branches ? Wouldn’t that impact her chances of selection ?

So, hypothetic scenario; if James Madison University had awarded 10 ( 4 year scholarships ) steming from the 1st and 2nd Board. And “another Virginia College has only had 3 recipients” from her list... would the Board offer a scholarship to my daughter ?

That certainly hasn't been the case for the last few years at least. The logic is that they award fewer scholarship on the early boards, and generally only to the very best, so they can wait for the candidate pool to develop. Since they are going to the very best they tend to get more 4 year scholarships. By best, i mean candidates who they know they will award a scholarship to regardless of how the candidate pool develops.

There are no separate gender OMLs. I can't speak to whether females might be scored a bit differently in some aspects other than physical fitness. I have no idea what the percentage of female officers is but I'm pretty sure it's higher than 10% (gut feel only).

Not the case. They do give some three years scholarships but many are given by the scholarship boards, probably more in fact.

They are, but they don't need that many either.

The schools on your daughters list has nothing to do with whether a scholarship is awarded. I could affect which school(s) a scholarship is awarded to. They are separate processes, as I understand it anyway.

[QUOTE="Highhopesmom, Thanks for responding and sharing. CONGRATS ! On TWO exceptional options with the Air Force at either: VMI or JMU.

My daughter and family are gutted.. last night her first choice school W&L published its decision for Regular Decision. She was denied.

It’s ironic that I’ve spent 20 years of my professional life working for Generals ( David Petreaus, James Mattis, Garry Parks, John Allen, Mark Brilakis, Douglas Odell )... and the university with a MASCOT of a General, kicked her to the curb. Most colleges “claims to have a holistic approach and that standardized ACT & SAT is not a major factor... but that’s malarkey.

So, this lesson will resonant with her....when it’s her childrens’ turn preparing for college”... ACT scores need to be 28 or higher & SAT scores need to be 1300 or higher. And to earn as much AP credit so you can enter College as a 2nd Semester Freshman.

[QUOTE="kinnem, Thank you for your response and insight. This will help immensely because, I have another child, my son, that would be pursuing a ROTC Scholarship in 2023.

So, for my Clarity: Interesting ... across the country, hypothetically let’s assume that Army Cadet Command at USAREC has 150 University ROTC programs. And on average, the Army has a budget to fund 1,000 nationwide 4 year scholarships. I would have assume that “each of its 150 Universities would have been faired-shared approximately 6 to 7.

Based on the OML ( 1 through 2,000 or greater) candidates with the highest ranking get their 1st college choice.

As the college / University get filled. Then, their 2nd or 3rd ....or 7th choice

This would prevent any University ROTC program swelling to Battalion size while other programs only have Company or Platoon size.

You could be right but that's not an assumption I would be willing to make. A smart way would be to assign more to a certain set of schools based on majors available, the quality of the schools, needs of the Army, etc. I bet they would tweek it every year. Just guessing though.

NROTC and AFROTC doesn't even try to portion them out by school. NROTC does specify a school(s) but transfers are easy and there is no limit on the number of scholarships allowed at a particular school. Both NROTC and AFROTC are probably going to favor engineering schools since they want 75-85% STEM.

I am so sorry to hear about your DD’s W&L decision. If she chooses to go to JMU I have firsthand knowledge that it is a wonderful school. My son is currently a freshman there. Did your daughter apply to VMI? Just curious as it neighbors W&L. Although two extremely different schools. We are in Northern VA and know all too well about the hardships and struggles with admissions when you are competing with others in NOVA.

[QUOTE="Highhopesmom, Thanks for allowing me to vent. We ( the Geralds’ ) are locals in the Harrisonburg area. Feel free to look us up & drop me a line.

My daughter didn’t apply to VMI solely because she also wanted a less restrictive environment then 7 days a week of executing the Plan of the Day. She viewed the scholarship was an internship / tryouts that would lead to an active duty commission based on her college & ROTC performance.

Please ensure that your DD does not get burnt out. I had friends that attended the academy (VMI, the CITADEL, NORWICH) and most of them felt burnt out and never finished their 20 year career.

SINCE I was a OCS candidate... I viewed ROTC as a more gradual “transformation process” vice the 13 weeks of pure adrenaline to 2nd Lieutenant.

My OCS graduation was taken 4 days before graduation and SOME Candidates “did not graduate” from our Platoon photo.

In all likelihood, my daughter will probably be attend James Madison in the Fall 2019. Hope to meet you & your son at JMU events.
