USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Congrats on GWU, my mid is there. You wrote "full ride," but do you mean "full tuition?" NROTC doesn't pay housing & meals, and GWU doesn't discount those for NROTC students. GWU discounts housing for STEM majors, whether ROTC or not. (Students who receive Pell Grants can use toward housing.)

    Interesting "problem"

DD is 4-c mid; applied for only the NROTC scholarship, applied to just 3 schools. Her "plan A" became reality: got her first-choice school as Early Decision, NROTC to cover tuition, Pell grant & federal work-study job help pay room & board. Her contingency plans included College Program or...

Mayday! Mayday! A Ship with No Port

DD is 4/c Mid; last year when completing her NROTC application, local recruiting officer advised her to list any colleges she liked as top 3 choices, then in-State public "safety" university as 4th choice, then-- if not selected for scholarship until final Board-- 5th choice list a college from...

    NROTC Scholarship awarded, what’s next?

Mom of DD 4/c mid here (translation= daughter is NROTC freshman); was in your shoes a year ago. There's not much for parent to do at this point. Staff at units/battalions will communicate directly with midshipman-candidates, expecting them to independently read & carefully follow all...

    CORTRAMID 2024

DD said mids in her unit completed Cortramid form recently. The form asked if mid staying at college for summer, or if will be at home address, as location determines whether mid is sent to Cortramid West or East. West: May 15-June 15 (East is apparently July 10-Aug 10)

    Difference between USNA and NROTC?

Parent here of DD 4-c mid Navy (not MO). Told by unit to get CAC. Cadet information was already entered into DoD database; then each Cadet makes their own in-person appointment to get CAC. (DD set her appointment to be during Winter break at a military facility near home.) There is info on...

4 -Year NROTC Scholarship Thread - Class of 2028

Parent of 4c Midshipman (freshman) here. My daughter submitted application August 2022; had additional interview for possible ISR but heard nothing more; then after waiting for months (a few boards), finally got a scholarship email in mid-March 2023. She was placed at her first-choice college...

    Bullying or hazing or what?

Mom of 4/c Mid here; someone gave my DD a small book by retired 4-star Admiral William H McRaven, "Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life... and Maybe the World." I recommend you buy this short book, read all of it, then give to DS if he hasn't read it. McRaven mentions...

Odd Question: Any Value in being Homecoming King for ROTC Resume?

My DD is NROTC 4/c Mid; when she applied for scholarship, it was encouraged that applicants ask for help from their regional advisor, as they are responsible to review applications for submission to the board. Just to note, here's a bio from a Navy website: "LTJG Kellie Hall knew she would...

    NAVY NSI 3 Begins!

DD graduated Cycle 2; arrived home tired, sick-- and excited about NROTC. (Unit: Capital Battalion). She's already thinking about next summer Cortramid. DVIDS website posts occasional photos; search for NSI Cycle 3. Pictures from prior cycles show Candidate training activities: Swim Qual, Man...

    NSI Toiletries

Just texted with daughter who graduated Cycle 2 this morning. She had followed checklist, brought almost nothing extra. On arrival, backpacks were inspected. She was allowed her to stow her book with civilian clothes-- but her lip-balm was thrown away.

    NSI - support for parents

However, the link on NETC site goes to the DVIDS site, which indicates the start time as 9:40 Eastern time (even though Great Lakes is Central)--- Screen grab says: Scheduled from Jul 17 2023 9:40 AM EDT to Jul 17 2023 10:50 AM EDT NROTC NSI Cycle 2 (Also, DVIDS countdown timer on website says...

    NSI Toiletries

DD is at NSI Cycle 2 now. Candidates should bring what's on the list: no more, no less. (Only things DD took not on list were phone and charger, plus dental-retainer hoping it would be allowed at night but knowing it could end up stowed with civilian clothes & phone.) DD flew there in khakis...

    NSI - support for parents

My DD leaves Thursday for NSI cycle 2 (we're west coast, so early morning flight). She's been going to gym for past few weeks, trying to be ready because she's a good swimmer but not so fast at running. I think my DD will be fine, with experience at several Sea Cadet trainings, including a...

    4-Year NROTC Scholarship Acceptance Thread

A few weeks after my DD received her NSI assignment (cycle 2) from her GWU NROTC unit, she heard from them again with notification of NROTC move-in/NSO. Your DS probably could contact his unit about their schedule. >>> From ERAU website: "For students starting in the Fall term, ERAU...

    Stipend Question

According to IRS Publication 3 for military information, stipends are not considered taxable income. (Taxable income received, such as Duty Pay, should be shown on something like a W-2 or Form 1099.) Quoted from IRS: "Items in Table 2 aren't includible in your gross income though you may have...

    NROTC Questions re NSI

DD was notified about a month ago that she was awarded scholarship to 1st choice school, where she was already accepted via Early Decision; everything seemed on track. A couple weeks ago we sent NSI packet to Great Lakes; certified mail tracking indicated it was received. But there have been no...

    NROTC Scholarship Awarded

DD recently received award email after we thought her application had been complete since July-- but during the first few boards her portal continued to indicate her application "at processing." A few weeks ago her recruiter contacted her: because while "at processing" an error was detected on...
