As the title says, tonight is 100’s night reception for the c/o 2023 (Thor). This dinner traditionally means 100 days until graduation. They should receive the base announcements they will be going to after graduation as well. Then they are off to a weekend of fun with their friends to celebrate (not mine, he is headed home for his uncle’s funeral). Then when they return Monday evening their dorm rooms will be playfully remodeled or decorated by the doolies of class 2026. I hope everyone receives their first choice of base they ranked on their dream sheet.

My C4C is excited to decorate his Firstie"s room!

Congratulations to the firsties! I can't wait to see the creative room decorating.

We sponsor a Cadet at the Academy and we are so excited for him to receive his base assignment! He's an amazing young man and will be a great pilot!

Figured I’d throw an update here. My DS received his UPT base. He will be headed to Laughlin AF Base in DelRio TX. His first choice was Columbus but that didn’t happen. I told him it’s all in what you put into it when you get there is what you’ll get out of it. Still hoping for something pointy and fast so my fingers will be crossed for him the next year or two depending on how long casual will take. On a positive note for me is it’s extremely close to Amistad lake and I love to bass fish for giants and that lake has them. If you did UPT at Laughlin I’d love to hear any helpful hints with the area, squadron, etc.

Congratulations to your son! You must be very proud

Congratulations!!!! Sorry he didn't get Columbus. It's a beautiful base. That's where my DS is currently for UPT. Formation solo next week, 2 major check rides and wings in April.

Son #1 did UPT at Laughlin. We enjoyed visiting him a few times while he was there. The town is small, but there are decent places to eat and some things to do. UPT life is very busy so the lack of big-city life was never an issue for him. If they do want to get away for a weekend, San Antonio is about 3 hours away.

Housing is hit or miss. The USAFA grads all arrive at the same time 60 days after graduation so there will be some who live in Laughlin Manor (on base hotel) until dorm rooms or housing opens up. Son lived there about three weeks. The dorms are more like efficiency apartments. The advantage there is proximity to classmates and the airfield. Other students will be placed in the student duplexes on Carlson and Ciarfeo Streets (a/k/a East Berlin). These offer more privacy but are further from the action. My son got a third option. Due to the overcrowded housing, he was assigned a 4-bedroom house in the enlisted housing area that he shared with three other students. All were classmates from USAFA and he really enjoyed the arrangement. He called it more “grown up” living.

There is some touristy stuff to do in town for parents. There are a couple of wineries if you enjoy that. Definitely partake in the local food places.

Fishing in Lake Amistad was not great while he was there. The lake level was very low so shore fishing was difficult. He went probably 6 times while he was there. Southwind Marina (affiliated with Laughlin outdoor recreation) rents boats if you’d want to try that instead. I don‘t know what the costs are for that. If your son is a hunter, there are mule deer, turkey, and javelina in the area and lots of public land.
