1st Choice

For those of you who earn an appointment to USMMA when Kings Point was not your original first choice, I would like to offer a piece of (unsolicited) advice. If your heart remains steadfastly with your original top pick where you were denied, please go the prep route or go to a civilian college and reapply. If you do decide to make USMMA your new top pick, be all in by the time you report for INDOC. If you show up still bitter about being denied your dream of being somewhere else, it will show. When the going gets tough, you will be more likely to drop on request, fail classes, or get setback. If your dream is to be a pilot or a soldier, etc, at least be open to a career as a Mariner. That doesn't mean that you have to abandon your dream, but be open to new experiences, especially during sea year. Kings Point is full of opportunities, so come with an open mind and a great attitude. Good luck to everyone!

Congrats on your son's appointment to USMMA! What's your DS's first choice between USNA and USMA? My DS is also from Missouri. My DS is still on HOLD/NWL and we are still hopefull. He is a recruited Football/Lacrosse player by USMMA. I believe I saw in one of your posts that your DS was also a recruited athlete. My DS is 3Q and has three nominations. His Plan B is Marion Military Institute (MMI) SAP. He didn't apply to the other SAs. He has merit/football scholarships offers at many other regular DII/III/NAIA colleges and universities, but he is most interested in USMMA. USMMA became his first choice after his visit many months ago. Washington University in St. Louis School of Engineering and Rhodes College Engineering aslo recruitung him was high on his list in that they offered ROTC programs. Also Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, but they don't offer ROTC.

All of last year USMMA was my son’s 1st choice. Our neighbor is an Alum and very involved as a regional liaison for the Academy. My son has grown up with this man as a mentor since he was around 12.
His goal originally had been USNA as he wanted to be a pilot. Over his high school years, he learned more about the Merchant Marine Academy and all of the excellent opportunities it presents, and he visited around this time last year. The diving coach really liked him right away and became an advocate for my son immediately. So USMMA became his No.1 goal.
Fast forward to last fall, my son became a foreign exchange student in Switzerland for his entire senior year of HS. In his time there, he has been exposed to different cultures, languages and politics.
He has grown up a lot and his interests have shifted. He now wants to study history, language, political science, etc to become a liaison officer in the Army. He did some research on West Point and is very excited about the opportunities there as well.
So I don’t really know exactly where he will end up.
He is still waiting to hear from USNA and USMA. There has been contact from both Academies recently and they seem to be still considering him.
He told me yesterday he is going to wait until next Friday and if he hasn’t been offered any other appointments, he will accept his appointment to USSMA gladly.
He is ecstatic that he has this opportunity and looks forward to the challenge.

Funny story, our Senator’s office had to call my wife with the good news because they couldn’t reach my son. So we told him the next morning...
Later that day our Congress Woman’s office reached out to him through email to set up a Skype call within the hour.
He thought....”this is it, another one”
Well, he received a nom to USMMA from both of them and she was calling to congratulate him on the same USMMA appointment. He wasn’t let down, just a little bit of a roller coaster of anticipation. She also nominated him to USNA, and told him she hoped to speak with him again next week...
In any event, we’re good, golden even. USMMA will be a great fit and truth be told, it’s what his mother and I both want, but we let him do his thing.

I went through the same with my older son during his last two years of high school where he keep changing his mind. Myself, I spent a lot of time working internationally in years past. I loved Lucerne Switzerland. Always one of my favorite cities in the world to visit. My DD, my oldest child, works for the Department of Commerce in Tariffs and travels to Geneva Switzerland a lot as part of her work. She got her undergraduate and masters in Inernational Studies and also loves history. Hope your DS is enjoying Switzerland. It's the most beautiful country in the world in my opinion.

Today I was notified I have been turned down by USNA. This means that if I receive an appointment to USMMA I will accept. Hope all works out but God has his plan.
I'm so sorry to hear, but keeping fingers crossed for a USMMA appointment for you! Do you know when today your portal was updated with the notification?
I got the email at 0852 Mountain Standard Time
And?
And what? That is the time I got the email I was turned down from USNA.
