Heard from my Mid 2 for 7 signing was last night. Mid was excited, relieved, and thoughtful of the moment and commitment it represented. Quote: " Dad, the Navy really owns my ass now." says it all.

Proud Dad

^^^^ Same from mine! Now trying to think up question that Plebe can not answer. Not too difficult but not easy. Reccomended a good one but said they would never get it. Extra credit???

A Quick (Probably Stupid) Question

Sorry to ask, but what is a "2 for 7's"?

The "2" means that the MIDN commit themselves for two more years at USNA. If they choose to leave within their last two years they have to serve in an enlisted status or payback the government their education value (to the point in which they dropped). The "7" means that from the signing of these papers, there is a mandatory seven year minimum service obligation (2 years remaining at USNA + 5 years minimum Active Duty service).

The "2 for 7" signing is a signing of a paper that states you will serve the minimum 7 years or payback the government. In reality, the contract signed prior to I-Day is the actual contract and the one at the "2 for 7" signing is just a re-affirmation.

Do they still give out the huge pewter tankards?

Filled with beer? (The only alcoholic drink I remember ever having had at USNA)

HA! But, yes just not on that day anymore and sadly they come in a box not filled with beer. but, there are still plenty of other opportunities to get drunk on the governments dime.

What exactly is the commitment up until the 2 for 7? After 1 year of school? After 2 years?

Thanks.

Bummer!

On my 2 for 7 Night we all went down to Dahlgren Hall, signed whatever form was required, then walked over to a table where these huge 1.5-pint or so pewter tankards were stacked up. We took one and off to the keg we went.

I'll admit, however, that the beer itself was pretty nasty.
