I have read in a few places that there is a 2000 dollar deposit due for USMA before R-Day, but haven't actually seen or heard anything along these lines from USMA. Can anyone offer some insight? Seems like that'd be a good thing to make people aware of in advance if it's true.

In the past, there was a $2k deposit due before R-Day. In recent years USMA has not requested this from cadet candidates.
Follow the guidance in your portal rather than reading old news that no longer applies.

Showing my age here...but many (okay, many many) years ago - it was a $1k expectation prior to R-Day to help defer the cost of initial uniforms, computer, etc. That was when cadet pay was $543.90 per month and as plebe you were 'fortunate' to receive $68 per month into your checking account....

We have an inbound c/o '27 -- and no contribution required.

Beat Navy!

Oh Wow. How the Corps Has. I wonder how they are handling paying for the initial issue of cadet items. Are they withholding money from the cadets for a longer period of time. I am sure the cost of uniforms and computers are not going down.

My DD is class of 23 and yes, we had to pay a $2000 fee. There was a spot for it to be checked off right in her portal. It was explained that it offset the cost of the issued items at Beast.

Did you have to pay, or by paying up front did your DD not have to pay it out of her monthly pay?

Yes, we had to send in a check. It was rumored that if a cadet candidate could not pay it, that they could contact USMA and it would then be taken out of their pay over time. I don't know if this ended up being true.

USNA used to require it and that was for a very long time. It got to the point that some entering Midshipmen
were forced to take out regular college loans to pay the "deposit" and seeing a loan table at I Day was very sobering
to a number of alumni BGOs who saw it and a group of alumni worked through the system to get rid of the deposit so that
everyone got to start on a more equal footing. I was proud to be involved in this effort at USNA and informally heard that
USMA was taking similar steps.

My son is a 2025, and he didn't have to pay a deposit. They just changed the withholdings around in their cadet pay to cover their expenses. I believe as a part of that change that his cadet pay as a Yuk is actually higher than his cadet pay as a Cow. I recall seeing a pay distribution chart somewhere when we were going through the process.

My son was in the class of 2020 and that class had the $2000 required deposit in advance of RDay. If a cadet couldn't pay it, then it came out of his pay over time.

How nice that they no longer have this requirement for the cadets.
