Just heard yesterday that a number of slots for 2010 Cortramid were being cut due to USA funding constraints. Not sure of the numbers but the Navy is first looking for volunteers that might want to have the summer or attend summer school. Cortramid is the summer program for freshman where they visit the four disciplines (surface, aviation, submarines, and Marines) to beging forming their ideas of the career path they are most interested in.

Further info makes it sound like they are looking for about 10% of the current midshipmen to skip Cortramid due to these new funding constraints.

my daughter called this AM having just found out that not everyone in her NROTC unit would not go to CORTRAMID. She said her command was not clear on who would go and who would not go. She said they mentioned everything form PT scores to who might DOR at the end of semester.

To say the least she was very concerned. After a really tough 1st semester, this has been something for her to look forward to this semester. CORTRAMID was her light at the end of the tunnel.

I agree. Very disheartening for the kids. I have heard that many schools will only allow around HALF of their freshman to go.

that was the skinny she was getting. They were asking about summer jobs, housing etc.
she was concerned about her unit using grades pt scores because her fall semester was a disaster, she had H1N1 and a numerous complications and wasn't able get official PT scores, her grades crashed and burned also. Now she is straight A's and leads the pack in PT. But despite being one of just a few women in her unit is concerned they'll leave her out.

Her NROTC unit had a number of other things cancel this year doing to "no money". It's getting a little concerning.

Mine was told it would be a combination score including PT, military bearing, attitude, and academics. I also did not realize the "college option" folks were not eligible. Only the scholarship students are even considered.

What galls me even more is I believe we know WHY (and who) the financial issues are a result of.

I agree on that.

We'll hope for the best!

I honestly don't understand how this country has been able to spend so much on useless stuff and cut back on the important things.

I can give plenty of examples of what the Dems have done since they're in power now, but it's both sides, and these political games are doing us a lot of harm.

We all know that there are plenty of useless things that money is being spent on, and to me at least, it really angers me when I see things like this:

Air Force to Trim 5,750 People by 2012

Marine Corps Trimming Troops

Generally I try not to pursue political topics in military forums, but these cutbacks, along with the tight reigns on scholarships and other military opportunities, are really ticking me off.

You know, in the past when we've gone to war, our economy has prospered. Look at the period after the Great Depression. I say if the government really wants to improve the country, get more jobs, and help the economy, concentrate more on national security. All of the private companies who help our military with armor, ammunition, etc could hire more people, and you can knock out two birds with one stone. Personally I've always been a huge supporter of NASA, and I think it's about time we start encouraging kids today to get involved with science and consider careers in fields like this. Put hope back into the idea of landing on the moon again, or another planet.

Money is tight now, but programs like these shouldn't be getting the ax. Programs that don't do anything to help this country, and programs that actually harm our country should.

I don't know, I guess I just needed to get that out for once here. Sorry if I went off topic.

have you heard anything more from your daughter about CORTRAMID?

I spent the weekend with my daughter, she said a number of her class were told they weren't going: IE nurse option, a couple that were known DOR candidates (including her boyfriend) and some with poor PT scores etc. But no confirmation that she was going.

She is NOT going. It was partially voluntary as she did want to take a couple of classes during the summer as well. With that in mind we really don't know how it would have turned out if she had pushed a little cause they only left two kids out and she is near the very top in both military bearing as well as PT with academics being down just a tad. Problem now it that it appears the Navy also does not want to pay for summer classes as they normally do. Let me know what you guys hear. Good luck!
