2020 Appointments

Just out of curiosity what do they need after giving you a LOA.
Hi there for my son LOA that came two days ago they wanted his BMI, he weights a lot but he is built thick & stocky, we got that done same day from our DR. & submitted it ASAP, he is in normal range & passed, so now we r just waiting for portal update to appointment but was getting nervous after reading some post here saying its no guarantee, but it is!!!! Very happy!!!

In the LOA email it says that if you complete the remaining requirements satisfactorily, then you are guaranteed an appointment. It uses the word "guaranteed"
It seems to me that the key words in that email is " complete the remaining requirements satisfactorily, " not the word guaranteed. Only the USNA determines what satisfactorily means for each candidate.

Word of advice for C/o 2020:
Your facebook(and probably other social media) WILL be looked at. Detailers can be ruthless so I would comb the pictures and refrain from "Future Navy SEAL officer" posts.

Hahaha! Middy is right. There was a social media thread a week or so ago on this. They will look, just don't be stupid. Everyone is excited to get appointed, we all were. But don't put stuff like Middy pointed out.

3boys...and his dog....are spot on as well as my boy Middy! Operative word is IF. Soooo....get your IF's complete, and hopefully then receive your appointment. Congrats in advance...but remember that the race isn't finished just yet. (Sidebar: I've played in games with 7 point leads with a minute left and lost the game).
  • Finish strong in your academics....give no one at USNA an opportunity to question your appointment
  • Keep your nose clean...social media included (WP pulled an appointment from a candidate last year for this)
  • Keep active but healthy...(bubble wrap) medical DQ for injury and such right up to I-Day is perhaps the biggest pitfall facing those appointed
  • Finally, NOTHING is guaranteed until you're standing in front of Bancroft Hall on I-Day saying "I Do"

What did the WP candidate post? It must have been bad.

So the way this went was at a WP regional briefing for prospective candidates last year her in our state in the mid-west. The speaker was the regional WP admissions officer who concluded his remarks with this cautionary tale about how a recently appointed candidate was turned into WP by someone who reported an inappropriate posting on a social media site by said candidate. He simply said that they looked into it and pulled the appointment.

Suffice it to say...he made his point.

So once appointmented should I tell son to close his FB & Twitter & snapchat accounts??? Or defriend inappropriate friends?? Think kids need few social media to connect? How do you balance?? Even for me I have few friends who send me inappropriate or politically distasteful news feeds & FB likes, which I hv no control??

They should be smart! Yes, they should unfriend folks if they think they will be posting inappropriate items. They can set their stuff to private if they want to. But kids are kids and honestly alot of word is passed via social media sometimes. Its one of the ways they will have to stay connected with all their friends, including them, headed all over after high school. If their gut tells them its inappropriate then they know it is. As much as they are being cautious about things, maybe they are at a party with alcohol but they aren't drinking, but have a red solo cup in their hand, what will others think? So they really need to think about where they put themselves and what are the consequences. Stay away from all illegal things and controversial topics on social media. I would say making their profiles private is a better move than deleting them, then they can think it through when they get to USNA on what is best.

You can tighten up controls on Facebook. If you go to "Settings" and "Timeline and Tagging" you can set it to allow you to review posts others tag you in before they are allowed on your timeline.
What if you change users name on FB account & others? Think that might be more realistic than closing social media??

You would think that would work. My company didn't rate social media first semester and a couple of my classmates thought they were clever by changing their username AND privacy settings. Still got caught and the whole company paid for it.

I'm not saying delete Facebook or anything, just be cautious of what is on there because people who have a large influence now will be looking.

DS just got an LOA. Only thing outstanding is medical. Says it has to be done by Feb 1 or offer may no longer be valid. We have been given no indication by doctors that there are any issues. Is there any way to goose DoDMERB or at least let admissions know it's out of our hands?

Thanks. He actually got an E-mail of Assurance followed shortly by a status change in portal to something like "Conditional Offer - LOA"

My son is just waiting!!! No word on anything yet. Wish they wouldn't keep people hanging for so long.
