2021

Looks like you have a good start on your application essay

Is anyone planning on NOT applying for SLE?
I don't see why you wouldn't apply. It's rolling admissions so you would be able to have a long time to decide whether or now you will go! From all the previous posts praising SLE, I don't see why you shouldn't try if you could.

My issue is time. It sounds like a great opportunity but I play travel softball year round and we have tournaments nearly ever weekend.

No sir. I'm a starter, and one of four returning players. I made a commitment to my teammates and I wouldn't leave them hanging like that, even for one tournament.

I admire your camaraderie but you should sit down and think about this once more, cause as people have said above, it is a priceless experience especially if you've been wanting to go since 6th grade.

I agree you should think long and hard about it, but ultimately stand by your own decision. I did not apply for any SA summer programs because I had committed to a high-level CAP Encampment position. Ultimately that was more important and valuable to my application (IMHO) than SLE/AFASS/NASS.

About SLE -
My son was a goalie for his hockey league. He was the top goalie and was super committed to his team and the league. He never missed a practice or a game. Never. Then he was accepted to SLE and as luck would have it, it fell during his team's playoffs. He had to choose and he chose SLE. It had been his dream to attend SLE and eventually WP for several years. His hockey league knew this and they were all cheering for him to get into WP. So while they were disappointed that he wouldn't be there for the playoffs (and his coach especially since their chances of winning were greatly diminished now), they all understood that this kid, who'd always been fiercely loyal to his team, was simply following the next step towards his dream. Coaches have to understand that their players have dream and aspirations outside of the team and sometimes those dreams conflict with the team. And I can tell you that the league was very excited along with him when his BFE arrived.

I agree that SLE would be a valuable experience for a potential candidate. However, based upon statistical data and feedback from others on this forum, it is clear that attending SLE would not increase her chances of getting an appointment. It is a recruiting tool. Many candidates who get appointments don't attend SLE, and many candidates who attend SLE don't get appointments.

In littlepatriot's defense, it is obvious that she has weighed her options, and to her, it makes more sense to support her teammates. I applaud this decision. Isn't that what we expect in WP cadets and in our military officers: loyalty, self-sacrifice, judgment, and dedication???

I don't think her chances of getting a BFE would be at all diminished if she doesn't attend SLE. Godspeed to you!

2021 hopefuls, don't forget about Boys/girls state. Participation is looked on very favorably by all the SA.

I applied to USMA, USNA and USAFA. I haven't heard anything yet. I just looked at my portal on USMA and my status is pending. I play competitive sports and for me I plan to attend as many as I can. Tough decision between activities and summer session(s)? Good luck to all getting in and good luck to all with making their individual decisions.

This wait is long and I know the next is LONGER.

WP recommends that if you would have to choose between boys/girls state and SLE, you choose state. I will recommend the same choice to you as well. It comes down to which will look better on your application. Being a top and committed player on your travel team or attending SLE. Both are great opportunities and experiences.

Another thing I would like to throw out there is that even you are declined for SLE (I was initially declined and then called back for vacancies, but I had already committed to NASS) that does not mean that you are not competitive for an appointment. I got an LOA in Septemver and just accepted my appointment. Good luck to all 2021 hopefuls! Hopefully in the fall I can answer any questions you might have about BCT.
