5 and Dive to IRR or Active Reserve/Guard for both Army and Navy?

Decades ago when I left active duty, I resigned my Regular Army commission and took an oath to be appointed as a Reserve Officer where I promptly was assigned into the IRR to finish out my 8 year military obligation. I'm curious in the current state of both the Army and Navy, once the 5-years of active duty commitment has been completed, how likely is it to be released to the IRR, if desired, or is it typical to require the Jr. Officer to go into the Active Reserves and or National Guard (for Army)?

Also, on the Army side only, do anybody have recent experience with going straight into the Army Reserves or National Guard, as to how long you were required to be "active" Reserve or ANG before you could be moved to IRR?

There currently is no requirement to be in the National Guard/Active Reserves versus IRR. I am not familiar with a time in recent history, the last 30-40 years, when there was such a requirement.
Now when you are in the IRR you are, of course, subject to recall.

Getting out of the Navy, you are asked if you want to affiliate with the reserves or not. If you do, you'll get pointed in the direction of the Career Transition Office to aid in the transfer. If you decide you don't want to do the Reserves, you finish out your time in the IRR. I hear a lot of people in non-additional obligation designators (pretty much everything outside of aviation) staying in for 8 years AD so they can get the full GI Bill. You only get part of it if you 5 and Dive.

Something to consider is the Reserve/Guard retirement. Yes, when you’re in your 30s 60 seems liked it’s forever, but it comes quick. You have to weigh this retirement against the possibility of lost wages in the civilian side while drilling. If you 5 and dive, maybe it’s not worth it. But if you have a longer ADSO, maybe it is.
Also, you aren’t limited to reserve service within your current service arm. I’ve known Marine tankers who transitioned into the Army Guard. Navy FW pilots who got Army Guard RW slots and Air Force reserve slots. Heck, I’ve known non pilots who got Army and Air Force Reserve/Guard slots. I even know Army pilots who got Navy reserve slots.
If you wish to finish up IRR and get the reserve retirement you need to earn enough points to make it a “good year”.

This is not exceedingly difficult to do but then doing regular drilling reserves is not especially difficult during most eras.
