504 plan help

My DS won a 3 yr Army ROTC scholarship. He was DQ'd for ADD and was requested AMI for a waiver. He has been off meds since 2019 and has his Rx records going back to show it. Unfortunately, he had a 504 plan that followed him to HS, which was never dropped. He has never used any of the accommodations, but when we asked his guidance counselor to write a letter saying that, she said she could not and could only note that he had a 504 plan. What can he do? We believe he will not be granted a waiver if he sends in her letter. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did his AMI specifically ask for records from HS regarding the 504 plan? The general recommendation is to not send more than what they request. Try to only send what they ask for.
You could ask the prescribing physician to write a letter stating that he has not used the meds since whatever last date was and the reasoning behind him not needing them anymore, or something to that effect.

Yes, AMI asked for a note from his guidance counselor stating if he had an IEP or 504 plan. Plus, AMI asked for his last three years of academic transcripts, which we have to provide.

Hopefully others can weigh in on this. They will accept extra information such as a personal statement from him which never hurts to include. They will consider more heavily a note from a physician of course. Congratulations and good luck to your son! Tell him not to get discouraged, and keep moving forward, you never know until he follows it all the way through.
 
Not knowing the 504 plan documentation... If he truly never used any accommodations (extra time, learning resource formats, quiet space...) I would assist my child in addressing this with the guidance counselor's boss or the principal. Get a few key teachers (Math, English, Science) to document for the counselor/principal/boss that the student used no accommodations. If the required meetings/reviews for an IEP or 504 never occurred during HS then use that as documentation too for the counselor/principal/boss. Provide documentation to the counselor/principal/boss that standardized tests (SAT/ACT) were conducted without accommodations.

My child had a counselor opposed to the military refuse to submit some documentation or form.... ok... watch me my child said.... the principal will do it.

A great example of when it is good to include extra information. Sounds perfect!
 
I agree that you should ask administration to write the note. Also have a teacher write about your son's lack of use of accommodations. Finally if no 504 meeting took place each year than there isn't a valid 504 plan.
