Hi SAF family,

Last time I was on this site was to add my name to the appointment thread, so it's been a while! Plebe year was quite the wild ride, and I know I always found it helpful when MIDN came back to SAF to answer questions. Please feel free to ask whatever you want here, or private message me. For a bit of context, I am a female MIDN, English major, and club athlete.

Are you hearing anything about your return to the Yard? Are they going to work your Summer Cruise into the AC year? What Club Sport do you play and how much time do you spend on your sport. Did you play that sport before?

@helmsdown There is a plan for 1/C and 2/C to return to the Yard, but still no word for the youngsters. Also no word on making up youngster cruise (it is, after all mandated my congress) so I'm sure we will make it up at some point. For anonymity I will not reveal my club sport, but I played it my whole life and the time commitment is perfect! We practice anywhere from 2-5 times a week depending on the weather (it is a fall/spring sport), and we always have a few weekend competitions all around the east coast. I also did intramural soccer and XC, and I enjoyed those too. Club sports, depending on the time commitment, are IMO the best way stay a part of a serious team and have ample time to focus on academics.

Thanks for taking questions!
My son is a plebe this year, and he was on boys swimmig and tennis varsity teams, an all-state level athlete in both sports, but he was not good enough to be recruited by USNA.
A few questions here:
(1) Does USNA have club teams for boys swimming and tennis? (I know they have varsity teams for these two sports.)
(2) From website, I see that swimming is part of PE for next three years. Can he validate swimming if he is qualified?
(3) Are boxing and wresling madatory sports at USNA?
(4) I know varsity teams are for recruited kids. But what is the difference between club and intramural teams? Do you need to be qualified to join them?

@wayne323
1. There is club tennis and intramural swim, but no intramural tennis and no club swim.
2. You can validate swimming by getting certain times on the validation test on the first day of class. I validated plebe swim with a certain 200m time, and plan on validating 3/C swim with a certain 400m time. I don't remember the specific validation times but I can look into it.
3. Boxing and wrestling is mandatory! I took them 1st semester plebe year, they were honestly a BLAST! They are part of the PE curriculum.
4. Club teams hold tryouts, and there are only a handful of teams who don't make cuts. Intramural teams are within company or battalion, depending on the sport. Anyone can join, and the commitment is very light.

Thank you so much for the quick answer!

* Glad to know that they have men's club tennis team. But I did not see men's tennis in the list when I checked this website here: https://navysports.com/sports/2018/5/23/school-bio-navy-intramurals-html.aspx. Wonder why?
* Yes, can you look into times for validation? You named a few long distance events (200 and 400m). My son is a sprinter, esp. good in 50 and 100 free.
* Is swimming PE every day class? If you can validate swimming, what do you think would be the best way to spend that PE time?

<--- Was not a recruited athlete but had 4 yrs of Varsity athletics at USNA.

My son was also not a recruited athlete and had 3 yrs of Varsity athletics at USNA. The possibility/potential is there but it takes determination and
sustained effort.

@wayne323 the plebe swim validation time is 3:30 for 200m and jump off the 5m, and for 3/C swim it's 8:30 for 400m and jump the 10m. I was a sprinter in HS too, and if your son is a competent swimmer he should be able to validate plebe swim. Once you validate, you have a free period in your schedule which your son can use to do homework, nap, clean, run errands, study pro know, or whatever he sees fit.

Note that PE is not an everyday class at USNA. If its still the same, plebe year was twice per week and the other years were once per week.

WOW. in which sport?
Also how could you make it to the varisity team if not recruited? They gave you chances to try out?

Hey I'm super interested in the triathlon team! Do you know if those members have usually ran a lot of past triathlons or just decided to try it out?

@strictlyws the triathlon team is full of a mixture of past competitive swimmers, past runners, and bikers alike. Most join without having done triathlons in the past, but I'm sure it would help. They are one of the fittest teams on the Yard for sure.

I was told that a midshipman's commisioning choice is tied closely to his or her overall ranking in the class of that year. Can you tell what consistes of this overall ranking? I guess acedemic, sports will count, what are others? What are approximate weighting factors for each of them?

Here is the policy on OOM (order of merit) and its various elements. It does play a role, but other factors not necessarily related to OOM numbers come into play. The goal is a good fit of warfare community and midshipman desires, skills and abilities.
It used to be straight order of OOM. As in, #1 grad gets absolute first pick.
