A discussion about submariners 🐬 ⚓️

Something to add to his research list, designed for people who know they want to be in the nuclear program, the NUPOC path:

There are NUPOCs at the top engineering schools in the country. Two samples among many:

And an unofficial blog:

As @MidCakePa noted above, identify the primary goal. There is more than one path to nuclear submarine service.
Great information to add to the table this weekend. Thank you.

Thank you. Yes, that will all be on the table for discussion this weekend. I'm not sure I probably conveyed myself with plan B/C. Mich has a strong math and science program that has been proven to send kids to Nuke School (or so I've been told).

Throughout high school, DS has excelled in at min Freshman level courses. AP English/language, UofM Literature, UofM Writing, AP History, AP Statistics, UofM Calc, AP BC Calc, AP Biology, Honors Physics, University Physics plus a handful of HS engineering courses.. ACT junior year 34. Math 35. He did not take it senior year. I have no doubt he has the ability to excel in college courses. It's finding leadership opportunities while in college he's worried about. It has been pointed out however that ROTC will provide opportunities for leadership.

I have seen forum users on their 3rd go at the Academy, so I know there is no guarantee. I don't want him to choose a school that he won't be happy with if round 2 passes him by.

I agree with the bird in the hand!
I'm a bit embarrassed that I listed out his academic accolades to this intellectual, distinguished group. Often I've noticed as a response on the forum. "Take college level classes and succeed at them." I really think he has proven that piece already.

Last, I want to really thank you all for your responses. You have given out some great information and definitely food for thought.

Thanks for graciously allowing me to hijacked your thread. Carry on with the reminiscing and great stories.

...Concur with author. I might add that the paper tiger's leadership and control in the South China Sea is based on strict, top-down
approach from central leadership (octopus 🦑 head). The tentacles (land, air, sea forces) lack the initiative to execute missions, thus handicapping bold initiatives. In the article, the political cadres were onboard to observe sub and ship commanders. Take out the head and game is over.
Opposite is true with our forces and allies. The 11 unified combatant commands(four functional {SOCOM, CYBERCOM...} and seven geographic {CENTCOM, INDOPACOM...}) serve as the tentacles. They "coordinate" only with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Thus the Combatant Commander is "it" responsible for his geographic area. They operate in clearly delineated areas of responsibility and have regional military focus.
In addition, our prepositioned stocks along the Pacific Rim, some in our Allies' backyard, are hard to eliminate. One can take out one or two tentacles, but the other 10 tentacles can strangle the paper tiger's head... (leadership & control).

Let us know what he decides! And your post is sub-related. No hijacking occurred. His passion is appreciated!

Ha, this is accolade central. I mean, I'm a distinguished graduate of a prominent elementary school but am too humble to mention it.

Obviously I graduated from a sub-par elementary. When I read back my posts and see all the grammatical and spelling errors I cringe. Thank you Devil Doc. You are one of a handful or so of contributors here I really read and value the responses of.

Thank you so much. I will! We talked a bit at dinner last night. As I was busy getting opinions of strangers on the forum, he had been making several phone calls and is progressing on a plan. He had a few dead end calls and 2 he found extremely helpful. He's not giving up on a shot as a officer on a submarine yet.

If it weren't for red underlines I would be considered eelitirate.
