I am a canidate for the USMA class of 2012 and I have heavily been looking into SMC like the Citadel, VMI, and Norwich. I visited the Citadel and had an admissions meeting at VMI. Both were very nice places. I became more attracted to the Citadel after reading the Free book one of the Deans gave me at VMI entitled The Institute. I also enjoy Charleston alittle bit more than Lexington.

- A few questions. Is rat year at VMI really that bad ?
- And say I wanted to re-apply to west Point would I be hindered at one of these schools?

Yes, some even consider VMI to be more harsh than USMA
No, you can transfer to USMA but you would have to start over as a Plebe

My regional admissions officer advised me to stay away from SMC because if I wanted to reapply to USMA the SMC would hinder me and try to get me to stay with them.

Well its the colleges job to keep a high retention rate, but they stop you from transfering.

I have narrowed my AROTC schools down to The Citadel, John Carroll, and Norwich. I am in the final stage of being selected for the army 4 year ROTC scholarship. But of course I am applying to West Point.

If you are afraid of VMI being too hard as a rat, go somewhere else.

They'll let you transfer out of VMI. But it's hard to leave your Brother Rats behind after everything you went through with them, to go somewhere else and do it again. One of my BR's transfered and says that physically USMA doesn't hold a candle to VMI.
