My wife and I were talking and we know that "freshmen" in USNA are called plebes. What about the other academies?

No - they are still swabs until they see a swab. Only a swab would think he wasn't until then.USCGA freshmen are only called Swabs during Swab Summer, then they are called Cadets after earning their shoulder boards.

I rest my case.DD considers herself a 4/C cadet and can’t wait for boards to earn carry on. She stopped thinking of herself as a swab immediately after swab summer ended. That’s just her position and opinion. Most everyone she knows also doesn’t consider themselves swabs either. They just think of themselves as 4/C and do the best they can to survive until carry on. And of course look forward to being 3/C.
