So, up until recently, I'd pretty much written off the idea of a Service Academy as my college choice... ROTC sounded easier and less stressful. More normal, you know? then in the span of the last three days, all of this happened:

Day before Yesterday:
-I write my summer essay. I wrote about how I got denied from SLE, SLS, and the NRA YES summit, and how being denied from all three gave me the opportunity to go to Boy's State (the motto is don't quit) which was a life changing experience. I finished by talking about how I take pride in failure and let it drive me forward.

Yesterday:
-I got a call from my admissions counselor, he's also known locally as West Point's "godfather". He has a super awesome track record of getting people in. Including a friend of mine who graduated this year. He talked about my file, said it looks great, and my leadership is 10/10. He said if I can raise my ACT score a few points, we'd be in business.
-My grandmother emailed West Point inquiring about admission. (my grandfather graduated in 1949 and was a general, not sure which specific rank)(Out of there 17 grandchildren, I'm the only one who has even thought about the Army, including West Point) They replied by copying my Admissions counselor, and thanked my grandfather for his service.
-An ad for admissions popped up on my instagram. (spooky right?)

Today:
-I log onto my ACT account... I raised my score 2 points. And not to flex but I got a 32 on reading. Like that's pretty cool right?

So... I kinda sat back and thought about these past few days. Like maybe getting in isn't so crazy as I thought. Maybe I CAN do this! I like to pride myself on being the best, and setting the example for others. So, instead of rolling over and taking the L from admissions and settling for ROTC, I'm about to take this head-on. But be it God's will that I do ROTC instead of West Point, so be it. I'll sleep easy at night knowing I gave everything I had. Hooah!! Go Army!

In shorter terms, I thought I was done posting under USMA. But I'm back baby.

Keep it up! Complete your entire application by October 31 including the CFA! Get tutoring help for ACT and take it every time ACT is offered between now and January, send all improved super scores to West Point. Get your dodmerb exam done early. Get congressional nomination requests turned in by September to both senators, congressman and VP. Stay on top of application process. Stay in contact with FFR and admissions officer often! Best of luck!

Sometimes our journey is on a path that’s there, but we are too blind to see. Sometimes we need “whacks” as I call call them. These are a couple doozie whacks! I have a feeling you are USMA ‘24. Keep your eyes open!! This is an awesome story!!

Just curious - I thought the main application wasn't opening till around August 1st for USMA. Kind of surprised the counselor was already looking at your file and especially calling you. Am I wrong?

Good luck to you.

I think it’s because my grandmother contacted admissions...? My mom works with someone whose son is a cadet, and their family the counselor my information. So it could have been from that? Idk I’m not sure... either way, I’ll take all the help I can get

OK...Marathon, not a sprint.
Get that spreadsheet set with the deadlines for USMA, Army ROTC, Congressional Noms, and your 4-5 other colleges--and get busy.
Remember, the USMA deadline is late February but your congressman and senators' deadline may be in September. Make a plan. Follow it.
Also, hit the gym and run...and watch the basketball throw techniques video.
Jarhead, sounds like your team is fully assembled. (Send that essay out for review by your team before your submit it.)
Best wishes.

Dear lord did I have a stroke when I wrote this? @williamsdr3

-My mom knows someone through work whose son is a cadet. Their family gave my mother the counselor's information and she contacted him and gave him MY information... but that was a long time ago. So, idk.

It is best from here forward for you as the applicant to be the only one contacting admissions or FFR on your behalf.
Yes, I agree. The email from my grandmother was out of the blue... but appreciated. My mother only served to exchange my information with my FFR... it’s all up to me now.
