Academic seperation and recoupment if I am found medically unfit for service as an enlisted soldier?

Good evening all,
I am a cadet who is being separated for academic failures. Since I have affirmed, I owe the Army either three years of service as an enlisted soldier or financial reparations. I have been told by academy officials that, in cases of academic separation like mine, former cadets are allowed to repay their education costs via service (this option is typically not afforded to cadets separated for serious misconduct). I remain committed to serving my country and am eager to enlist, however, I am concerned that I may be rejected for military service at MEPS due to a condition that I contracted after becoming a cadet. Does anyone know of any cases like this? If this were to occur, would there be any options available to me to spare me the burden of financial recoupment? Thank you for your help.

The place to ask this question is the DoDMERB Forum, ask Mr. Mullen. As far as I have ever read here is that if you are separated and cannot fulfill your enlisted service due to medical ineligibility there may be a chance that you can "walk" because of your medical condition developed while you are at an academy. As a Cadet you are active duty and many medical conditions developed therein are treated the same way as any other active duty soldier. What this means is you may be able to get a "medical' separation which would relieve you of your enlisted obligation if you are unable to enlist because of a medical condition you developed AFTER affirmation and contracting. I am not sure how this would work as far as who you need to contact, but I would check with your BTO or whomever guides you on your out processing. I am sure there are members here who know more than I, but I would write Mr. Mullen on the DoDMERB Forums and he may have guidance.

In any event, I respect your decision to serve even as enlisted if possible. That goes a long way towards showing your character and you have my Best Wishes for a good conclusion.

My small 2 cent recommendation if NOT separating for health reasons and are successful in enlisting. If you have an INTEREST in aviation put in a WOFT packet in becoming a Warrant Officer aviator, health permitting of course. Complete your degree on active duty with the option of applying to OCS in the future. Good luck.
