Hi everyone! A friend of mine was told that she couldn't be granted a waiver until she received an acceptance from the academy, but it was my understanding that the opposite was true. Has anyone else had an experience like that? Anyone know what it might mean? Thanks!

You can’t be offered a fully qualified offer of appointment until you are fully medically qualified. However, you can be offered a conditional appointment being conditional on obtaining a waiver.

I am copying here the response from our admission officer:

"Medical waivers are granted based on the competitiveness of the candidate's overall application. Once a medical waiver is initiated, you will be notified as well as being provided further guidance on additional information that DoDMERB and/or our medical team will need. Until then, no further action is required".

As of today nothing was requested from the Academy in my son's case.

This is one of those areas that there is too much information available , creating unnecessary angst among applicants and parents. The only thing you really need to do is be responsive to any requests for information, follow up visits, etc. Where it is in the review process really doesn't tell you anything -- ultimately there will be a waiver and BFE, or not.

At this point the USNA is initiating the waiver process for those who are deemed competitive for appointment so until/if admissions determines that, a waiver process will not be initiated. Good new is initiation of a waiver is an indication an appointment may be on the way. I just think she communicated it a little differently.
