Accepted Appointment - Now What?

Hang loose and enjoy your senior year. At some point in the spring, a packet will open with lots of requirements. For now, you can make sure your immunizations are up to date, and that you have a bank account established.
Get your flu shot. It is hard to get one in the Spring when you see you need it if you never went that route earlier.

You’ll get a big To Do list soon enough.

If you don’t have a passport already, apply for one now. You do NOT need it to report in, but you could need it while at USAFA and on active duty. It’s just easier to get it done now and not try to get it when you are crazy busy being a cadet.

This is last year’s guidance to appointees - at some point in the coming months, if the pattern holds true, you will receive the Class of 2027 edition. Not much changes from year to year, but don’t go crazy executing this past example. Look for things that make sense as repeated items from year to year as and be ready to get them done.

PT - run, run and run, including at oh dark thirty and not the best weather and when you don’t feel like it.

Have fun browsing the past threads here on SAF that pop up in the spring from anxious appointees.

Be in the moment now with friends and family and home life. When you leave in late June to report in, you will start a new stage in your life, where for the next 9+ years your time at home will be infrequent and brief.

Is the flu shot mandatory and if so, flu shot from December 2022 would qualify for class of 2027? Thank you.

I have accepted my appointment to USAFA class of 2027 in my portal. What should I be looking to accomplish in the next few months? Paperwork for I-Day? Plane tickets? Or is it still too early to be thinking about any of this? Any advice is appreciated!
You have so much time. Be careful and make sure not to get hurt! Keep your grades up!! And most of all enjoy your time with family and friends!! Oh.. and stay out of trouble!! 😊

Keep in mind the majority of the appointments do not come out until March. @LTBob87 had a very good point! This was the Immunization requirements for last year to use as a guide. Great to be able to get any you do not have out of the way!

See the link provided in my post above as a SAMPLE from last year. There is a section on Immunizations. I have never seen the regular flu shot guidance change over the last srveral years.

Default guidance is always check with a primary source, someone in your USAFA contact list/Admissions.

That is a good tip to get the flu shot now while it is in season and in plentiful supply.

Congrats!!! Enjoy your senior year, time with family and friends. Keep up with workouts and running. In addition to the passport, get the real ID and get your wisdom teeth out.

You’ll get a big packet this spring of things to do. If you’re planning on the family coming with you to I day? Book the hotel now. We enjoyed a few days in the springs before basic. Not necessary, but it was great. adS got some runs in and we got to explore CS.

Do you remember when in the spring the packet came? Through the mail or candidate portal?

I agree with others, keep up grades and physical fitness. Don’t due anything stupid to have the appointment taken away and don’t get seriously hurt.

Just to add to the list above, if you are able, it would be wise to have your wisdom teeth evaluated and removed if recommended. This should be done at least two months before I day in order to allow proper healing and to account for any complications. Congrats!!!!!

Would removing wisdom teeth count as a medical DQ? I thought surgeries within 6 months was automatically a DQ and non-waiverable.

In your packet it should mention wisdom teeth. If I remember correctly, they just need to be removed two months before I-day. My son had them removed mid-April of last year and he had no complications with DoDMERB.

This is fabulous! Is there something similar for USNA from last year? I couldn’t find it but this great info to think about. Thanks for all the good info and advise on here!

This is from the handbook:

"Wisdom teeth may cause lost academic time and possible delays in pilot qualification for cadets. It is highly encouraged for you to visit your family dentist for a thorough dental examination, paying particular attention to the above-mentioned concerns. Correction of all dental defects and removal of wisdom teeth, when indicated, before arriving at the Academy will maximize your dental health, prevent lost academic time, minimize any dental conditions affecting pilot qualifications and go a long way toward ensuring your success as an Air Force cadet. If your civilian dentist has recommended you have your wisdom teeth removed, we strongly suggest you follow their advice. However, it would be best to have at least 8 weeks of healing between when the surgery is completed and when you arrive at the Academy. "

My son is a senior and is going Pilot. Still hasn’t had his wisdom teeth removed but he did say while he was home for Thanksgiving if you’re going pilot they have to be removed before Graduation so if it were me I wouldn’t do it just with an appointment. What if you don’t get your job drop as Pilot? What if you change your mind on jobs after seeing what all is really available with the Air Force and Space Force? What if you end up not being PQ on your big junior year flight physical?Too many factors to do a surgery you may never need.

1. Enjoy and celebrate with your friends and family. Reflect on the hard work it took to get here and the amazing, indescribable feeling of reaching this summit. Remember this feeling as it will motivate you to climb other summits in the future.
2. Stay out of trouble.
3. Keep your grades up and stay engaged.
4. Exercise regularly. And mean it. Being physically unfit will immediately set you apart and not in a good way.
5. Think about how you want to spend your time between HS graduation and report date. Make a plan that includes friends and family. This is a good time for a vacation but be back from vacation in time to mentally transition to what is ahead.
6. Track and act on the Academy requirements but don't sweat them. They will be taken care of.

USNA is “Permit To Report.”

Last year’s is probably still posted for Class of 2026. Let me go get it. Hold my glass of wine.

Ah. Still posted. They update items on those pages in the spring for the incoming class. Be sure to browse through hamburger menu selections.
