My son will be attending advanced camp this summer then will go straight to an Army internship so I am considering going to the graduation, if that’s a thing to do.

My DS graduated Advanced Camp almost four years ago, so my info is a bit dated.

Nonetheless, I did attend his graduation, and I'm glad I did. Keep in mind that over the two years of Army ROTC, he enjoyed a pretty normal college life out west, and taught snowboarding in the winter and waited on tables in the summer. Advanced Camp turned out to be more challenging to him than he thought it would, and his seeing his brother and me for a visit was highly welcomed.

Fort Knox is also an interesting place to visit. Louisville is also worth your time as it has a wide selection of bourbon tours that are of interest. If you love baseball, a visit to the "slugger" tour is a must. Louisville is also where Lewis and Clark embarked on their expedition.

I would pass on the optional "dinner" at the Saber & Quill on post at Ft. Knox. Your DS/DD would much rather go off post to have a meal than to eat there. Plus there was no real ceremony, only an opportunity to chat with other parents.

If you do take your cadet off post to eat the day before graduation consider the following:
  • Don't go to Louisville, as it is too far to go and come back by their deadline.
  • There is a decent Steak place called Colton's in nearby Radcliff.
  • A lot of cadets don't have parents visiting, so it would be very nice for you to take one or two of your cadet's buddies along for dinner.
