Advanced Camp Graduation

Lots of threads on this but unless you live in the area or desire to vacation in central KY there is no expectation for family. Most of the cadets will be focused on getting out of there and back to school or whatever summer is left.

We attended last summer. Louisville is actually a fun place to visit. We visited the Louisville Slugger museum and there are very nice restaurants in town. Also worth a visit are one of the many bourbon distilleries in Louisville, quite interesting!

There were quite a few parents there, but @emwvmi01 is correct in that there is no expectation for parents to attend. We took a few of our DS's buddies to lunch with us since their parents did not attend. It was really fun to see the rapport that had been built between his platoon members. The bond of friendship was palpable.

If you do go, I would pass on the Parent's Day Feather and Quill dinner at Ft. Knox. The food was okay, but there really was no reason to attend it. It was just a buffet dinner with no speakers, presentations or anything. We got to meet a few other cadets and their parents, but it was kind of dull. In retrospect, we would have preferred to go out to one of the other local eateries in the immediate area. (You won't have time to go into Louisville and have your cadet back in time).

Bottom line, if you can afford the trip, it can be a lot of fun, and your cadet will likely appreciate seeing you after a month of bugs, humidity, rain, and mud. If not, it is okay as he or she won't be alone.

We'll be attending this summer; attended Basic graduation as well. We flew from the West Coast and just had a mini-vacation--never been to Kentucky before.
We stayed on base at the Holiday Inn--DH is retired Navy. The hotel was very close to where a lot of the formation drilling was held and graduation practice, so we were able to watch (from afar).

We didn't go into Louisville, but spent our time locally hiking and just wandering. This summer we'll hit the bourbon trail!

Depending on the weekend of graduation, Elizabethtown holds a classic car show which we attended. If you are into that sort of thing. So many classic cars. We enjoyed it but I think it was close to 1000 cars, maybe more. I do not exaggerate. I don't think I will need to see another classic car show for awhile.

We also did not attend the Parents Day dinner; took our cadet into one of the local places--the name of which I can't remember but it was homestyle/country food (big servings), many locals dined there, and someone bought our meal because my daughter was in uniform. That person had left before we could thank him/her. I had asked our daughter if she wanted to go to the dinner being held; she was emphatic that she wanted to get off base, eat some "real food".

I found that, at least from the West Coast, flying into Louisville was pretty expensive, so we flew into Indy and drove.

We plan on going this summer as well, DD is doing CULP then straight to camp, so it will be nice to support her but also see her after two plus months. Her sisters will already have gone to school for the year as they are student-athletes. Basically it isn’t like we will have a lot else going on, and we have never been to Kentucky!

If your on vacation and have the chance go to Mammoth Cave National Park. It's just an hour from Fort Knox.
