Good evening/morning/etc.

I am completing my nomination application to my senator and I have faced a problem regarding my SAT. My current score is slightly above average (I took it without studying to see where I was at, with the plan that I would see where I need to improve and retake)

I was going to take the SAT MAY 6 but I have AP tests May 2,3,4,5 and I would be really burnt out, I don't think I would do great.
Then I was planning to take the SAT in June but it is the same day as Summer Seminar. Meaning I would have to take it in late August.....

I want to submit all my applications as early as possible, my question is, do I turn in everything with my current SAT score and then update appropriately or do I wait to submit until I get my SAT score back in early September.

Also, is it possible to update SAT scores to the application to USNA and senators/congressmen.

I would also like to add I have a 4.0 with 5 ap classes (this year), so my academic record would show that I am "smart."

Thanks.

Good evening and welcome to SAF!

Good idea on holding back to take the SATs until after AP exams, they burn you out. Plus, you'll want a little time to relax after completing such a rigorous period of studying; August is a perfect time.

For USNA you can submit new SAT scores after submitting the big application they have you complete (ECAs, Essays, etc). Keep in mind though, the admissions board begins meeting the first week of September. Taking an August SAT would likely not impact the initial review of your application, and even if it did, new scores could get you back in the conversation.

For updating SAT scores for the academy just send the scores to the same school code included on the application. As far as your MOC/Senators, you should be able to send them a new "print out" PDF of your scores from the college board.

Please keep in mind though, for NROTC, you can only submit scores once with your application as your NROTC application is only scored one time. Though again, with an August SAT you should be able to easily make the October board for NROTC.

Good luck! :)

You should be able to send in SAT scores until the nomination deadline but check with your MOCs office to be sure.

Don't rush through the nomination app, though. Make sure you take your time to turn in the best application.

Thank you, my senators and congressman have posted the application months prior, so I have had my application read through and ready to go for a while now (however, my counselor is checking it over of course)

The problem that i am facing is that if the SAT is late august I would get my results early September..... June vs September is a big difference in time.

Thank you so much! This definitely calmed my nerves.

In my state, the deadline for the nominations wasn't until late November. Depending on when your deadlines is, why not just hold off until you get your SAT score back? They likely won't start handing out interviews until after the deadline, so I don't see the benefit of turning it well before the deadline.

I can't see the timing of your application trumping (bridge reference) the content of your application......but what do I know?

I know that what ever the timing of your submittal, you should be studying the SAT and ACT tests themselves. Learn/practice how to read questions, increase your "best guess" odds, managing your time, understanding the relationship of questions in each section of the test/s.

If you live in a reasonably sized town, there are likely places that proctor practice tests (weekly, monthly, quarterly) that you can sign up for. Repeated practice tests will help your comfort level with the real thing, and a structured review of your practice exams can by used to target your subject matter studying to directly improve your score.

Lots of options are available across a range of prices. But IMO nothing beats in person testing and a little follow-up tutoring (courses usually offered in the summer) ; think of it as a solid investment in your education options USNA or Plan B options.

Princeton Review worked really Great for both my kids, but there are a ton of options.

Do as many practice tests as you possibly can, and if you can swing a tutored review of your test/s........ do it.

Way better bang for your study hour studying the ACT/SAT tests than studying the material tested.

Good luck to you.

You'll ideally want to be above 1400 SAT to be competitive. Keep in mind that the national SAT average is not very impressive. So while "Above average" sounds good, in the end they are looking for top students.
But yeah, as others said above, just do all of the practice tests that you possibly can before the test, within the SAT time limit for each section. Khan Academy is an amazing resource for SAT practice. They have full-length tests as well as tons of practice problems that you can spend as much time as you want going through.

Thank you. I am studying for the SAT daily on Khan Academy, I find it to be a great resource.

I would recommend looking into the ACT. USNA superstores between the two tests. Dates may align better. And I would do asap after AP’s, as you would have that studying fresh in your brain.

Taking both is a good strategy, no matter the reason. Some will do better on one test compared to the other.

Also, make sure you understand COMPLETELY and THOROUGHLY, your Sen/Rep rules. They may, or may not, allow test updates. They are free to run their process however they want.

My son didn’t subscribe to earlier is better. He subscribed to on time. That didn’t mean do everything last minute. It meant submit your best application according to rules.

For future readers, he also didn’t take the SAT to see where he stood. He prepared for the SAT (not ACT) and took each once. Ready to take them again if necessary.

Also, you will find that being at an academy, especially plebe year, you will face a brutal schedule and won’t have the opportunity of sitting a test out. They are teaching the midshipmen how to perform under pressure.

For OP, if you don’t do as well on the SATs after the AP exams, it doesn’t hurt your application.

Also, the SAT in your situation is more important to your appointment than AP exams, or Summer Seminar.

They aren’t looking at who is smart enough. This is a competition with others. Scan the forums. There are many candidates smart enough that fail to get appointments or nominations. While your academic record appears to be “good enough”, nobody knows how it compares to your peers fighting for the same spot.

Best of luck.

OP,

DS took first SAT (scored 1460) last year along with 3 AP (all scored 5 including Calculus BC ). He ordered the both SAT and AP results to be sent USNA before they were released (so he did not have to pay). He applied for NASS on Jan 4th (the first day it opened) but he did not get an invitation.

He took his 2nd SAT (scored 1580) last month, again he ordered the score to be sent USMA, USNA, NROTC, AROTC. He wants be a strong candidate so he may get a medical waiver.

Your 2nd SAT should score a lot higher, for my son it was 120 points higher.

Present yourself as strong candidate as you can -- that is all we can do. Let the academy to choose, and in the end, we need a strong military.

In fact NROTC wants you to list all SAT scores

"List all ACT/SAT scores with test dates from Dec '21 to Dec '23
Only SAT/ACT scores from Dec '21 to Dec '23 will be considered for the 2024 scholarship year" < that is on application portal

DS is in the process of the application. His NROTC coordinator also wants to have all SAT/ACT reports
