AF decisions

in all due respect. At the top of this thread -- I let parents know there were cuts. I told people even the best were being cut. Then I got attacked. That is f'd. You privileged folk that made it through on non covid are very disrespectful of the facts I presented. 10 got cut at yale. 11 got cut at Rutgers. They are good kids. Some how a few here have no respect for the youth that wanted to be like you. crazy town
I respect where you are coming from. Yes the AF said it was 4-year scholarship and in the fine print said it wasn't. I have no idea what they told my son when he contracted (no scholarship) and I can guarantee you that half of it went over my son's head when they talked to him. It is absolutely not fair to your son and to the others who are going to be kicked out. However, there is always a but, someone has to be let go as they dont have the numbers. There are horror stories of people let go from the military in the past, how people who were offered pilot spots had their position yanked and eventually let go. If you read the stories, the AF has a habit of going from overstaffed to understaffed based on their decisions. So for whatever criteria they had, your son has to go. I have no problem with you complaining and some people seemed to not be very sympathetic to your cause. However, between your complaint and your defense of your complaints, the number of posts you are making are over the top and make you look less sympathetic. Your son joined in the worst possible time and my son joined in the best possible time and there really isn't anything anyone can do . Chances are if your son started college 2 years from now, he wouldn't have this issue. Why because AF pilots will retire and go for the airlines. Those who postponed their retirements because a guaranteed Air Force Job is way better than no civilians job waiting for them will also create a need for new officers. Yes if the AF was smart, they would keep some of the people realizing that staffing needs will increase in 2 years and not go through the cycle of needing to push people through because they are understaffed. You have made your point, let it go. You have written your warnings to those future high school graduates. It isn't your job to let them know what may or may not happen in the future.

Sorry if I'm a little uninformed but from what I'm reading if you don't get selected for field training you lose your scholarship and you're out just like that? Can someone with more knowledge on this subject please explain the process of how this works??

Sort of. You're required to go to Field Training after you receive an Enrollment Allocation. An EA is basically the Air Force saying based on projected needs, they should have a spot for you once you commission. Those EAs are broken up into categories based on tech and non tech majors, interest in flying, etc.

If you're NOT selected, you can be asked to return as an AS500, meaning you get another shot at it next year. If on scholarship, regardless of whether or not you get offered 500 status, you lose it. You can also be told to hit the road if you're not competitive as well.

It's kind of messed up tbh. We had a 100% selection rate for years when I went through, and they gave out rated slots like candy. Now, the purge has come back after the binging cycle.

For anyone not selected, also consider the Air National Guard or Reserve. You get education benefits and can apply to be a pilot with them after graduation.
@J.T1009 - From a different...but somewhat related thread.

yep you do and people are trying to mute me. Not cool. They want to pretend this is just fine and how it is. But the AF is F'ing many kids. My son is straight a's for Two year's and they yanked field training and his scholarship from an IVY. He is best of class in several area's but not a STEM major and they screwed the heck out of him. Yep that is true

Not necessarily, if you are on scholarship you’ll lose it but it doesn’t mean it’s all over. There’s a chance that your det commander can allow you to take a 500 year where you are a GMC cadet for three years and try again for an EA the next time around, although even then that doesn’t guarantee you’ll get one.

I hope you and your thought-provoking posts stick around, forever . I can't fathom going a single day, without reading your inputs.

Anything less...and I'll feel hollow, inside.

What they are saying here is it will be just fine. Then next year if you get booted they will say "You should have read the fine print". "Doesn't matter if you got straight A's at Yale or some place good" The fine print says they can do that. Yep that is what I learned on this site. It is NOT a 4 YEAR scholarship. It is CONTINGENT on the wind. Not on your performance. IT IS ON BUDGET. No one should sign up for this.

YEP they lied to me and to my family and to my son. Sat in front of 350 people and said he had a 4 year scholarship. They didn't read the fine print and you are a problem to suggest contracts are above integrity. The USA Air Force lacks integrity and I just said that. I hope some one calls me to talk about that. TOTAL LACK OF INTEGRITY. you cant stand in front of 350 people and tell them my son has a 4 YEAR scholarship and then he gets STRAIGHT A's at ONE OF THE HARDEST SCHOOLS in the WORLD and you call him and remove his scholarship. THAT LACKS INTEGRITY of what YOU SAID in front of 350 PEOPLE. LACKS INTEGRITY. Period. WTF Air Force. How do you stand in front of his high school and say that, then he gets perfect grades, good fitness, best enthusiasm in the class and you boot him. YOU AF are not doing the right thing.

I guess what they say in front of 350 people doesn't matter. It's only the fine print of some paper. Is that what you are arguing? Then it is OK. Do you see kids how the ROTC works now. SOG says if you write it in fine print it doesn't matter what the recruiter that showed up at school says. It's OK if they still screw you That's what happened here. And SOG want's to defend it. You should go back to your cave.

I for one am glad I caught this thread in time. I was this close to switching to Marine Option, but now that I know recruiters sometimes don't give the whole picture I'm pretty sure I won't have the opportunity to fight a dragon.

At least I'll get to fight some aliens with Rihanna this summer on my enlisted cruise.

Sorry,

We killed all the dragons, before you were old enough to sign up.

Were I to do it all over again....I'd take Rihanna.

Just sayin'

@mtnwing You have given a lot of personal information and make it very easy for someone to identify your sons. We know where they go or plan to go school, their years, their last name, the state they live in...Have you considered how your rants may impact them if they continue to pursue the AF or another branch of the military?
