I am currently a junior in high school and am a little late to the game. No one in my family is in the military, and this is the first year I have really researched and thought about being in the Air Force. I have not done JROTC in high school, although our school offers it, and I was wondering if it would be beneficial to do just my senior year. Also, does JROTC look good when applying to USAFA? Thanks!

Not sure about USAFA, my kid has been in Army JROTC for four years and this year is deputy battalion commander. He had a strong application but got a TWE from USMA and USNA and had service connected nominations from JROTC to both (and senatorial to USMA). Do JROTC because you want to do it, not because "it looks good." Have multiple plan B's lined up that you can be just as excited about as USAFA. Good luck to you!

IMO, doing JROTC senior year as your first year will have little to no benefit to your USAFA application. However, if you want the experience, go for it. Personally, I would rather pursue CAP, Civil Air Patrol, instead of JROTC in your situation.

I don't know that it will impact your application much. But it may give you a little taste of the military. Its a pretty distant taste, but its a little.

If you want to do it because you want to learn a little more about the military and help you make a decision, then by all means do it. If you think having JROTC on your application is going to propel you forward in the process, then you will likely be disappointed.

Get great grades, score high on SAT/ACT, play a team sport and demonstrate leadership through a club, team, student government or other activity.

Extras like Boys State, JROTC, CAP, etc are not the meat of the application. They can help, but they do not carry the day. What makes them help more is if you actually do something meaningful with those experiences. If you can write about how they helped you a certain way or how you grew from the experience or learned your leadership style then great. Just having them on the application itself is better than not having them, but don't ever think that they will make up for poor grades, and/or low test score. I see a lot of people over emphasize these extras instead of doubling their efforts on grades and test scores to their detriment.

Your activities are an important part of your overall application (and resume'). JROTC can provide some nice additions for you along with insights into a military career. As noted by others, some alternate extracurricular activities may be better. I recommend that you reach out to your Mentor LO (for the AFA) to discuss your record and qualifications. I bet she/he will help you decide if joining JROTC as a senior makes sense for you. Good luck pursuing an AF appointment!
