My son will be applying for the program very shortly for a spot this summer. He meets all criteria. (He's a 3rd yr., contracted AFROTC cadet)

In reviewing the Q&A's, they have to find their own living quarters and pay for it, their own transportation and I am assuming food and such for the 8 weeks. Where will they find a place to live for 8 weeks?

In order to bring a vehicle (because they state you need your own transportation to and from base), Eglin AFB will be the closest and he can drive there.

Anyone's Cadet been in this program?

On the website for AFRL Scholars there are housing resources for each base listed:

I am only aware of this program because my son went to Kirtland AFB to be a speaker for one of their programs. I would also suggest asking around his detachment to see if anyone knows someone in that area. When my daughter was doing her DPT clinicals she stayed with people who she found about through word-of-mouth. When she did her clinical at USAFA she stayed with my oldest son's sponsor family from when he was at USAFA. There are many great people out there. As far as paying expenses goes, the stipend is very generous for these programs. At your son's level of education he would be paid as a GS-6 or about $3000/month.

Thank you for responding :)

He arrived home from college last night and we had a discussion about this.

Nobody in his DET has participated in AFRL, he states. His grandparents live in Pensacola (45 min. from Eglin AFB) so this would be a great option. There are a few "jobs" there that he's really interested in. However, there are several aerospace "jobs" at another location which he said he would love. He said he's interested in this program, specially if it's a hands on engineering experience.

He did say that his class will be the first at his DET to have this as a requirement for graduation as a STEM major, so I am glad he's serious about going. I just wish that he could speak to someone personally who has done this already. There are only 4 cadets that meet the criteria to go, so not sure how it could be a requirement if they do not have the GPA for it though. ( he has a 3.3, required a 3.0 for the program, and I believe a 2.5(?)to at least keep rotc scholarship) I did not have him elaborate, it was late when my college kids arrived home.

Thank you for the link. I guess I missed it rummaging through the site. He's huge on researching, so I have all confidence he will find what he needs and find the best fit for himself.
