AFROTC Application Advice?

Before deciding to fully complete my AFROTC app., I applied to state schools with "business" major selections on a "pre-law" track. I know that not many AFROTC scholarships are given to those with "general" majors (non-tech or non-language selections)... Any advice or commentary from those who are familiar with the process? What should I do/expect? Thanks!

A little confused by the wording of the question, but if you put a non-tech major than yes, your odds of a scholarship are lower. You will need better numbers and a better interview to get a scholarship because it is more competitive. If you put a tech major on the application and get a scholarship, you must enroll in that major at the school you end up attending.

Honestly from my vantagepoint, this is simple - is it your goal to serve in the armed services as an officer? Then go for it/ apply and see what happens. Don't let odds or statistics discourage you. Apply, and know that there ARE some AFROTC scholarships awarded to non tech majors. You have a chance/ are in the running if you meet the requirements outlined in the application site.

As a quick story years ago I flew to a job interview along with a fellow candidate and the whole plane ride, he was telling me not to feel bad if I don't get the job, as they are looking for people with an MBA like him, and with direct experience with X like him, who are already six sigma certified like him.... Guess who got the job among the two of us, and who didn't? D*mn the statistics, d*mn the torpedoes - go for it and win lose you'll at least have tried. And line up plans B, C, D for your future including starting ROTC as a college programmer.

Good luck to you/ thanks for your willingness to serve.

**Correction: If you put a tech major on the application and get a TECHNICAL scholarship, you must enroll in a supported technical major.

The major nor the school you put down in the application is NOT BINDING.

I beg to differ. My daughter had to put down a SPECIFIC major and WINGS made her go back to her school of intent and have them update the offer of acceptance to reflect THAT MAJOR. Not sure if that is because she received a CSL Type 1, but she did have to match exactly her major.

My DD is in the process of changing her major from a tech to non-tech. She was told that she will lose the Type 1, but will be lowered to a Type 2. There is a lot of paperwork, and we won't breathe easier until it shows up in WINGS. But the Detachment has to be on board with the change or it won't go further than that. She has a good rapport with the Cadre and they knew what she was going through so they have been very supportive. Now fingers crossed HQ keeps their word that she can switch.

Hmm. I was given a tech scholarship and told that I can use it on any tech major at any school. Maybe its a change in the scholarship terms between when your DD received it and I received it. I have talked to some friends who have also received AFROTC scholarships this year, and their experiences are similar to mine. They received their scholarship designations and their paperwork says use it on any approved major at any accreditted school. The only trouble I have heard of was from a friend with a foreign language scholarship, who had to do some dancing to make it work at her ED school. Otherwise, I have seen total flexibility in the HSSP Scholarship.

It may very well have changed because with her hopeful change to a language, she didn't have to declare what language. But yes, last year, it had to be a specific major for her scholarship. Glad to see it's a little easier now.

I believe it is fairly easy to change from your tech major listed on the scholarship application to another approved tech major. (not all are on the approved list). And while possible to switch later from tech to non-tech, cadre will have to be on board and it is less easy. I got a type 1 tech and have been told I will have to stay in an approved tech major or it is unlikely I would be able to keep the scholarship. My point is just that you shouldn't list a tech major on the application for the increased odds with the intent to change later.
