Do AFROTC graduates automatically have Tricare after commissioning even if they aren't reporting for a length of time and not getting paid? Thanks.

Search out threads for medical coverage. Primary answer is no, not until they report to first duty station. Not sure if service puts officer on educational delay.

I dug this out of my bookmarks from an old thread:

17.3.10. Health Insurance Statement (Attachment 15). IAW FY04 and FY06 National Defense Authorization Acts, Reserve officers awaiting EAD are entitled to active duty health care benefits. New second lieutenants are eligible for TRICARE coverage after commissioning and before EAD. Dependents are not entitled to medical benefits until the officer enters EAD. Newly commissioned officers must drop Other Health Insurance (OHI) benefits and be enrolled under TRICARE. This is accomplished by not checking "Has health insurance" in WINGS. Detachments are required to update their graduates in WINGS.

Clearly, that is old stuff above. I don’t know how or if the legislation allowing grown children to stay on parental healthcare plans longer has impacted current policy.

I think the key is to get current and accurate advice from unit chain of command.

Thanks! That reads to me that coverage starts after commissioning and before EAD. That is what I thought the case was with my older son a few years ago. But that son is deployed so I'm not hearing much from him. And my youngest is going to ask when he gets back to school. My impatience caused me to inquire here though. :)
