AFROTC Experience

Both my husband and I did AROTC. Kids #1 & 2 are AROTC. Kid #3 is starting SFROTC. We discouraged our kids from seeking out ROTC roommates. It is good to have different groups of friends, and Freshman year is where a lot of those groups are formed. Just my opinion- and has worked out well for my kids, so far. Just need to be clear that you will be waking up early a few times per week.
I agree. My son moved into an apartment with three of his friends. Two were Rotc and one wasn't. The one who wasn't Rotc did belong to a Fraternity, allowing my son to interact with other types of people and groups. He had a great year. In years 3 and 4 he lived in a house that belonged to Arnold Air (basically a fraternity connected to the AF Rotc) and mainly interacted with Arnold Air people (who are also Rotc) and not the regular Rotc guys. One of the guys who lived in the house had made it to Arnold Air but the latter quit Rotc. My son was very close to him since they lived together in the same house for 2 years

Hey guys, nice to meet you all! I'm currently enrolled at CSU/UNC Det 90 AFROTC, and had a quick question to see if anyone else has shared a similar experience. So, about 3ish weeks ago, my colonel informed me that I was selected for a type 1 scholarship, and was onboarding me to getting it "activated". However, I found out today that AFROTC Northwest Region command rescinded my scholarship, and it went to someone else. Additionally, no explanation was provided to me as to why this was. Mind you, I have a 4.0, have no medical disqualifications on my dobmerb, more than passed my fitness exam with a 95, and have no civil involvements, so I am unsure as to why my scholarship was revoked, especially without reasoning. Has anyone else encountered something similar?

I'm sure sorry to hear that! Who notified you? Was it the Colonel that had told you you received the scholarship? Would he be able to offer any information regarding the situation? If the Northwest Region was offering a few of these after the National Awards were given, it may have just been that you were behind others in the timing of the offer/acceptance and they may have simply run out of money. That does happen sometimes unfortunately.

Keep focused. Pressures that can get you in trouble by living independently are high. My son went to University of GA and it is a huge party school, so there was lot's of pressure to go into bars underage. He'd have nothing to do with it. Would sit outside and people watch while friends would go in.
My son did not dorm with an ROTC cadet. His dorm-mate was an extreme night owl (sometimes still gaming when my son would wake to go to PT). He was quiet and wore head phones and my son had a small fan clipped to his bed for white noise. It worked.
All the best and Congrats on your TYPE1

So, for a little context: I often times help out at recruiting events for my detachment, and thus, work with a lot of the cadre. One of the cadre members that I regularly work with, who's a captain, notified me that I was selected for the three year scholarship. During a particular recruiting event, he said that I should have received a call from my Det's colonel to inform me of how to activate the scholarship (note, it was about a week after he initially told me that I had received a 3 year scholarship from when he told me about the phone call). After the recruiting event, he then gave a call up to the Colonel, who then told him about my scholarship being rescinded without any explanation from a "higher board". To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what to think about the situation, however, your explanation of the Northwest Region running out of money does make sense. I just kind of wish that my cadre just explained that to me.

Hello everyone, I'm lucky to have received a 4-year type 1 scholarship to join detachment 645 at OSU later this year. If anyone has any advice or experience they'd be willing to share for summer prep or for the first year in general, that would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve had three AFROTC kids. My advice would be to do the normal activity to stay in shape but also to enjoy your summer break. As for the first year, make friends outside of ROTC so that you don’t live in a bubble. Also start looking at Project GO options for next summer. Good luck!

That's a pretty high bar. For example, 15:28 for 2 miles looks like 90/100 of the ACFT 2mile run for a male. 13:22 gets 100 points.

AF uses a 1.5mi run I think so its hard to compare.

If someone was a track or XC athlete in HS, 13 minutes might be no problem but without some running background or natural ability? A 13 min 2 mile will take time to achieve and will be unreachable, frankly, for many. Just trying not to scare off the OP here..
If you go running with a plan and keep to it 12:00 sub 2 mile is very doable for any 18 yr old kid just push yourself. I was not a good runner when I was in the Army but I wanted the pts so I jumped into a faster run group my last 2 miler was 11:56 and I was 6’1” 2015lbs. You can dot it
