This is what I read on the AFROTC application page. Does this apply only to scholarship winners, or to people enrolled in AFROTC not on scholarship as well? And is this just for AFROTC or all branches?

Army and Marine option NROTC care least about majors.
Air Force and Navy option NROTC award scholarships in af tech vs non tech, and Navy does tier scholarships or nursing options. If you apply as a tech ot tier one major, get the scholarship say under engineering then attempt to switch to be a philosophy major, you may hear the 24 second shot clock buzzer. All AFROTC cadets are competing to be invited to advanced camp. College programmers are competing for 2 or 3 year scholarships ( more often 2 now). There is no rule against non preferred majors- see their afrotc site for a list of preferred majors, but if you’re trying to date someone who say likes tall bald musical athletic people…

People try to get the tech advantage when applying then switch. Navy needs approval. Af too but I would say for AF it would be rare.

You are allowed to change your major when enrolled in AFROTC - several of my friends have done it - but it requires filling out forms and getting approval. Especially if you are trying to change from a "technical" major to a "non-technical" major. Ex., changing from aerospace engineering to political science. Changing from one technical major to another is typically easier since you're staying within the highly desired major realm.

Army and Marines typically don't care as much about your major. Navy option generally follows the same process as Air Force except Navy uses the tier system. But again, it's much easier to switch from a Tier 1 to a Tier 2 or vice versa than from a Tier 1 or 2 to a Tier 3 (non-tech) major.

Bottom line is you can't commission without getting your degree first so pick a major that you are interested in and can succeed in.

Thank you for your response, what did you mean by this part?

Meaning both the Navy and Air Force - esp the Air Force, telegraph/ directly indicate their preferences. So that information can be useful to you.

If you are a college programmer already, competing to be invited to advanced camp and to commission with the Air Force, you know what their preferences generally are.... if you are undecided on a major should you at-least look at what they prefer, see if you can fit into one of those roles? Overall, do not pursue a major you don't have passion for, and yet. If you haven't yet chosen what branch to pursue, can you use the data of what they prefer to shape which branch you sign up with as a CP? If you're applying for scholarships you can apply to all of them and see who lets you in then decide later, too.

Point is - knowledge can be powerful if you use it. Good luck.
