AFROTC scholarship acceptance deadline

I've been stalking a couple threads lately, and I'm seeing a lot of references to a 1-month deadline for accepting an ROTC scholarship.

Where is that information coming from? I have an AFROTC scholarship offer that's been sitting on my desk for over a month now. While it does say over and over not to miss the deadline, the only deadline it gives is 31 May 2013.

I have not contacted anyone about this, because the only thing I've heard to the contrary is on this board. Usually it's pretty accurate, but I know in the ROTC sub-forum especially branches occasionally get mixed.

So, for 100% clarification: does anyone know where the 1-month deadline originated? I imagine it's either from AROTC or NROTC, perhaps both. But I can find nothing that says that an AFROTC scholarship acceptance requires anything before the 31 May deadline.

I would advise you to just accept it now. You can decline later. Idk if it has changed, but last year I had about a month to accept my AFROTC scholarship offer. It may be that May is the real acceptance deadline, but it'd be a shame to lose the scholarship because you sat on it for so long and missed a deadline you didn't know existed.

Thank you, Invisibility, for verifying what I was positive it said on my son's paperwork. I did, however, e-mail his liason this evening just to make sure I had not misunderstood. I will let you know when I hear a response.

Non Ducor Duco, you can't really accept it right now without also having your letter of acceptance from the school you intend to use it at. That was my confusion when others were talking about a 1-month deadline. Things may have changed from the way AFROTC has handled it in the past, but my son's paperwork specifically says the Letter of Acceptance for the scholarship MUST be accompanied by the letter of acceptance from the college.

Vareporter,
Non Ducor Duco was right about last years AFROTC deadline, because my DS received an AFROTC scholarship on the first board and he had 30 days to accept the initial scholarship offer. The letter of acceptance from the college he planned to attend had a seperate deadline. Just shows you how the process changes from year to year.

FW Dad--thanks for that. I also posted the 30 day deadline, because that was my DS experience last year. I didn't think I had remembered wrong. My apologies to all I might have confused.

I got confirmation that I had not misunderstood. Apparently things changed between last year and this year. The deadline is currently May 31st, and Letter of Intent and letter of acceptance are sent in at the same time. I was in major panic mode for a few hours there.

I wonder how this change will impact later boards. If the earlier boards can hold onto it without accepting/declining than theoretically AFROTCHQ has to believe that the money tied to the scholarship has been taken out of their pot.

IF it is spoken for, and it is limited, that impacts the next board regarding awards.

They know that they will never have 100% acceptance rate, and by doing so it could increase the ISSP budget for that class yr. when they are now in AFROTC. Sim. to what we are reading about AROTC offering more 3 yr scholarships now. AFROTC only has ISSP or Type 7 3 yr conversion to 2, but still there is that 1st yr tuition with a no harm/no foul penalty.

It does sound like there is a bigger picture for why they went from 30 days to 6 months.

Before anyone freaks, back in 08, when DS went through it was like this yrs. It might be they also found no difference with the 30 day option. Kind of like when they stopped Max 6 for 11, and in 12 they brought it back again.
