AFROTC Summer 2021

My DS reported to field training over the weekend in the first group to go to Camp Shelby. Had to report on Friday with start of field training on Tuesday - I guess that is their quarantine over Memorial Day weekend. No word from him as expected other than he landed in New Orleans and met the cadre.
He is a junior on a 4 yr scholarship who was deferred from summer camp last year due to the limited slots. He was a priority as he is on track to graduate in 4 yrs as an engineering officer. He received his orders and tickets just 3 days before his travel date as it sounds like HQ AFROTC is backed up.
Sounds like his detachment had a decent selection rate but he didn't share a lot of info. He is a good scholar with a 3.9 GPA after his junior year majoring in mechanical engineering. He actually left from his summer internship job to go to summer camp and then will return. He spent the previous 8 days quarantining in a hotel room to move into a corporate apartment and then shipped off to camp the next day.
Will post a report from him when he returns June 15...just glad he is going in June and not July or August to the South.

The Commander at the Detachment my DD will be attending is one of the officers at the field training this summer... Nothing like a hot summer in MS!

Has he heard anything? My daughter still doesn’t know anything. So frustrating.
It may depend on their Det...DD’s Det(including their supplemental adds) have had their schedules. Her commander was trying to move her up to accommodate Project Go, but instead her professor worked it out so she could finish both. Poor thing is going mid July which freaks me out way more than it worries her. Good luck to everyone going to FT and the parents that worry about them!

I told her to check with her Detachment on Monday again. They asked her which dates would work two weeks ago and she hasn’t heard anything since.

my DS returned from the first group at Shelby. Week 1 was a lot of virtual training with the 19 other cadets on his bay (dorm area). Then week 2 was with his flight with mixed cadets With a lot of field activities and leadership reaction stuff. He enjoyed it And had a lot of positive experiences.
He said some cadets received very short notice to make the camp as it sounds like other cadets who were selected dropped or couldn’t make it. He also reported a number of cadets dropped while at camp. About 50-60% of cadets were vaccinated but he didn’t hear of any COVID19 outbreaks.
A little bit disorganized as to be expected for the first wave with a lot of hurry up and wait. 2 meals in the DFAC/dining hall and then an mre for lunch daily. Laundry was an issue as it sounds like the contract is with a Georgia outfit - he lost a uniform in the laundry somewhere as it wasn’t returned - sounds like this was a widespread issue with missing items and stuff coming back discolored/grey.
sounds like they had the nice tourist buses with AC to haul them around and not the old Bluebird buses I was used to back in the day…..so they would be able to cool down while in the field as needed which is a really nice option To prevent heat exhaustion.
weather was okay - just rain every afternoon. Sudden downpour and then it clears, but temps were pretty moderate. overall a thumbs up and glad it’s done with…now back at his engineering internship on medical devices.

My son got an EA! Only 8 out of 26 cadets got them. Now he must decide if it will actually be possible to get a pilot slot this route. Does anyone have any advice on other routes to get a pilot slot or the likelihood of a AFROTC cadet actually getting one with the limited slots?
Three ways to get a spot. Air Force Academy, Rotc and OTS. OTS has basically stopped taking anyone and unless your son can get into the Air Force Academy, his only path is Rotc. Just because they have limited pilot spaces doesn't mean he wont get a spot. They usually give out 450 spots to Rotc every year so while they have limited the numbers, it is not zero

Getting a pilot spot is in his hands. He is already going go Field training, so the door has been opened. He needs to do well in the following
1. Score high on the Pilot section of the AFOQT test. Preferably someone in the 90s would be good
2. Have a decent GPA. Anything over 3.0 should be good, although the higher the better
3. Need a high Commander Ranking. Need to do well at AFRotc, Be seen, volunteer, and do more than the minimum. Make the commander like you
4. Do well in the TBAS test.
5. Score in the 90s in the PT test
6. Get flight hours, Don't need a pilot license but have hours. One of the things they look at is your PCSM score. The PCSM score made up of the TBAS test, plus the pilot score of the AFOQT test. This calculation is then supersized by the number of flight hours you have. It not linear so if you have 100 hours, it wont double the score compare to having 50 hours. Something like 20-40 hours will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

If he can kick butt on these 6 items, there is no reason he won't get a spot. Having said that, nothing is guaranteed.

boy this thread makes me glad I didn't do AFROTC
You can say the same thing about any hardship experienced in any service or commissioning source. While I was deployed to CENTCOM and the carrier group that was supposed to be home for Thanksgiving got extended for the third time, it made me very glad I didn't go Navy.

Everything in life is about luck and timing. I would rather be lucky than good, but people who are good tend to be luckier. YMMV.
