So let's say you successfully graduate a Service Academy in general or even as an ROTC and go on to your commitment as an Officer in the Armed Forces. After 4 years of service, what exactly happens? Do most people decide to stay in the Armed Forces, Do they choose to go to grad school. What do they do?

For example, let's say someone was interested in the engineering field. Would this particular individual focus on engineering skills and tasks in the Armed forces then attempt to get a job after his commitment?

I just want to make sure I exactly know what I'm going for and what I'll be doing in the future.

Thanks in advance

First of all, it's five years for a service academy before you can leave active duty. At that point, it depends on the person. Lately many folks have left. Most of my class has departed from the Army, as we generally have two to four combat tours and are tired of being away from home.

Most leave and go on to grad school. Many enter the workforce, though that has been tougher in recent years. Often former officers are recruited for their raw skills (leadership, resource management, etc.) than for a particular task they mastered in the military, like the engineering task you mentioned.

Or, if you do really well at USMA, you could get invited to come back and be part of the USMA junior rotating faculty. They will send you to grad school, and then you will be an instructor for 3 years.

Also, the acquisition corps employs officers to implement new technologies, work on R&D, ect.
