An LOE for someone who has just begun an application?

I very recently began my USMA application, and have not submitted anything other than the candidate questionnaire (not to say I am procrastinating on completing my application, simply that nothing is fully ready to submit). However, I received two Letters of Encouragment in the past weeks. On what basis would these be sent to me considering I have not provided much information to admissions thus far? Could this be a sign of a small number of qualified applicants in my congressional district?

If you haven’t submitted much yet, it’s quite possible your competition hasn’t either. So I suspect it isn’t anything to read into.

If I were to guess, something in your questionnaire interests them. Gender? Race? Initial assessment of any qualities they are looking for?

Put your best package in timely without worrying about competition.

Don't focus on the LoE, which just means, get moving to finish your application...again, it is not just about you, it is about USMA reporting how many people applied each year. So, just do your best and get moving w/ submitting your most competitive application.

Often times schools send these out due to a high score on PSAT. West Point sen the same to my daughter, after she did well on that test. In the end, you still have to go through all the regular steps of an application, meet the other qualifications, and obtain a nomination. The RAND info found on this site shows that students who score high on standardized testing, do well at academies.

I just got an LOE and yet everything is done except nomination. Even medically qualified. I thought these were used to encourage people to finish their application. Not sure what mine's for then.

It might allow you to do an overnight visit? You can check your portal to see if you are able to schedule one.

Interesting. I didn't take the PSAT but I self-reported my SAT scores on the questionnaire. However I didn't think they were above average.

It does say that but I did SLE. I don't think I really need an overnight visit.
SLE is a carefully curated experience coordinated by Admissions with intentionally chosen cadets.

Overnight visit allows you to get raw, unfiltered data and insights from cadets involved in all kinds of things, be inside a company and living with them, probably attend class, observe what really happens, good, bad, crazy, cool. You can find cadets to talk to about majors and branches. You’ll be there in the middle of 4k plus cadets living real cadet lives, seeing what really happens. Invaluable, if you can swing it.

I'm sure West Point is what I want. And money is tight. Do you think an overnight will help my chances on West Point's side of things?

USMA knows not everyone can afford to travel there for an overnight, so they don’t use that as a differentiator.

It’s great if you can go, perfectly fine if you can’t.
