Hello parents/appointees/hopefuls/TWEs/etc

I haven't visited this page in more than a few months or so but I know its that time of the year again. Appointments are being sent out and for those who are accepting it or even those who haven't gotten one yet, I know you have many questions in your head. As someone who got a TWE and then reapplied by going through a civilian prep school, I think I can answer a lot of questions that you all may have. Questions such as BCT are fresh as I'm still a (recognized) doolie. With Spring Break coming up and having a somewhat of a light load this week. I thought I try to give back to the community and answer some questions you may all have.

What’s your recommendation for boots to bring to I-Day?

Honestly, if it was like for me, I know they're going to tell you to bring a pair of boots. But I would not spend the time or effort in buying one. They will just issue you two pairs if you don't bring one on I day. They'll give you one then and then, if I remember correctly, another one down the road. I ended up getting issued two boots because I wasn't wearing my boots while inprocessing so I just got an extra pair of boots at home just sitting there never been worn. If it matters that much to you, I would recommend a nice pair of either Nike or Rocky's. Use these during first BEAST when they won't take too much wear and tear. But when it comes to second BEAST in Jack's, use the boots that are issued since those you won't mind once they get destroyed on the A-course, O-course, etc. That way you can have a nice pair of comfy boots to wear once the ac year starts.

@KamikazeKim Thank you for thinking of all of us as Spring Break approaches and congratulations on your Recognition. A lot of folks were praying for the class of 2021 that weekend. I'll bet you got lots of pins on your lapel! It is exciting to be a parent on the threshold of beginning the entire Doolie year. Was your Doolie year as expected, harder, or easier than expected, and what surprised you most about yourself and the Doolie year?

When did you receive your TWE? Which month? Did you go to Summer Seminar but still receive a TWE?

I’m not gonna lie, doolie year was rough. I didn’t know much about it and thought basically it would be all over after basic. Boy that was a rude awakening. You have to learn to manage your time because a lot of times it seemed I never had time to myself and those weekends I did, we would be restricted.

Should we memorize any information like 7 basic responses etc

Honestly it might help you at the footprints or a bit here and there. But reality is, it’s not going to matter. They’re going to find a reason to beat you (PT). No matter how well you do anything during basic, you’re always wrong. Just don’t let it get personal. Once you start letting it get to you personally, you start losing. Realize that it’s literally their job to do that and nothing outside of that. Yeah basic will suck at times but you’ll have some funny moments too cause you’re stressed all the time. Even the most trivial things become funny and you from some good bonds.

If you really do want stuff to memorize, I would memorize the 7 basic responses, airmen’s creed, and core values. There’s some quotes I could tell you but I think its more fun struggling trying to learn those during basic
Are core values the “integrity first, service before self..” etc.?

I have a question. I know that cadets play intramurals all through the academic year, a couple of afternoons a week. Can cadets pick their choice of intramurals, or is it assigned to them? How often does it change?

Cadets can typically play whichever intramural sport they want, although this can be squadron dependent. Each squadron is responsible for fielding 4 different teams for each of the 4 sports so if everyone in squad wants to do the same one or two sports, obviously some people won't get their first choice. As for how often it changes, we have fall intramurals (soccer, flag football, dodgeball, and ultimate) and spring intramurals (basketball, kickball, softball, and volleyball).

Do my son played for a D1 type baseball high school baseball program in California. Ie. 7 of the starters have early D1 scholarships. Do you know if the baseball coach watches these intramural to determine abiliity, or does the DS need to schedule something with the coach?

I'll preface this by saying I don't know that much about the baseball program here, but if your son wants to potentially play intercollegiate baseball, I would recommend that he talk with the coaches beforehand. It is highly, highly unlikely that they would recruit someone out of intramurals.

One of the checkmarks for appointees is about Drum and Bugle Corps. What's up with that? Do they need more people than they get volunteers? Do people avoid it because of a particular reason you can pinpoint? Too much time? Too much work? Too much travel? Why do you suppose it's part of the appointee slate of questions?

It's probably just to keep count of the people interested so they can keep the program going. I was interested earlier, but after realizing the time commitment required and how much I miss within the squad I decided not to do it. Significantly less people than who initially show interest actually join DnB so I honestly think it's just to keep the program alive and doesn't really benefit in any way. It's as simple is if the appointee is interested in doing DnB despite spending less time within squad and less time with upperclassmen. However, you do become really close with people within DnB and get to travel a lot.
