Anticipating a DQ for Spondylolysis. What can I do?

I just received a Navy ROTC scholarship, but I am anticipating a DQ from DoDMERB because about a year and a half ago I had spondylolysis. I got it from wrestling in high school, fracture of L5 on the right side. I was in a brace for 2 months, then I did my physical therapy. The fracture has not filled all the way with bone and probably will not, but I have been pain free for about a year and can exercise vigorously with no issues. Swimming and diving are not issues either; I completed several scuba certs with this and had no issues whatsoever. I have already been accepted to VMI where my scholarship is placed.

I have not yet had my medical eval with DoDMERB, but have filled out the medical history. From what I have read on here, spondy is an instant DQ. If anyone has experience with this, please let me know what I should do to increase my chances for getting a waiver.

Any help is really appreciated. Thank you.

Start by gathering all of your medical records associated with this issue. I recommend a dedicated thumb drive. You may need an Adobe Acrobat subscription to read & print them if necessary.

Each case will be different so you will not know until you go through the process. In my daughter’s case, she was DQ’d, waivers requested for USNA and USAFA, but both waivers were denied.

As already stated, getting your medical records all buttoned up and gathered. It makes sense that a DQ would be forthcoming. My add, would be to make sure you have put thought into where you are attending this fall should a waiver not come through.

Good luck!
