Multi tools and Swiss Army type watches vary widely in cost. Any advice on what to buy for our daughter? Do we need to go Leatherman or does a basic Amazon type tool serve the same purpose?

Leatherman MUT or WAVE are very popular multi-tools. SOG is another popular brand amongst soldiers/Marines.

Cheap tools don't last. I would avoid off-brand stuff.

My DS is an Armor Officer and still has his Leatherman WAVE two years after commissioning and one year after a Middle East deployment.

I agree to stay away from the off brands. The quality does not stand up. My favorite multi tool has been my Gerber. I love how the pliers and wire cutter can be accessed one-handed, with just a flick of the wrist. I've had mine for years, with no complaints.

I gave out engraved Leatherman tools as gifts to my wedding party. 25 years later, they all remain in use and my friends say it still the coolest gift they ever received. Just sayin'...

Tie some gutted 550 cord to the lanyard holder with a bowline and two half-hitches. Plant the idea to tie down everything they don't want to lose early on. I shudder to think of the amount of knives and multitools that are lost over a military career. Without a lanyard, that goes up exponentially.

We got Leatherman MUT EOD. The best one on market suggested by a senior cadet. Bit expensive. Gave it to my DS as Graduation Gift

Leatherman wingman. If you can splurge, buy the wave. Best multitool on the market!

DD used a Leatherman Skeletool for CBT. It served her well, and she did not want anything different for CFT.

I have carried a skeletool since R-day and it’s been perfect. I didn’t need a million tools…just a good knife, pliers, and a screwdriver takes care of 95% what I have needed out of it through deployments, working on aircraft, and just general field craft. It’s a great tool, and I was incredibly sad the day, eight years after buying it, when I finally managed to break one of the tools. Cool thing about leather man, if you hang onto the receipt, they’ll guarantee your tool for life so still rocking the same tool

I recently went to an WP Club event and was told that cadets will receive a multitool and other objects when they arrive to CBT. Does this mean that incoming cadets should not purchase a multitool?

A good rule of thumb is that your personal gear will be better than the Army-issued gear.

We got a gerber for my dd, she didn't want to risk losing her engraved leatherman she got for graduation. She said it worked well and she used the leatherman after beast was over, she was on sandhurst her plebe year so it came in handy.

I got my DS a skeletool, and he had no complaints. He is at CFT with it now. We also got him the Casio Men's Super Illuminator watch (about $25 on Amazon), and he loved it - but only for Beast not for the school year because he preferred his apple watch. He told us that he somehow lost the casio during the first part of CFT and had to buy another from the cadet store. We were nervous hearing that and asked, "how much did it cost to replace at the cadet store :( ?" - he said "$15". I was very happy!
