My grandpa is currently finding out how we will be traveling back to Maine this summer and he wants to know if he will be needing to pay any costs right off the bat if I'm on scholarship with NROTC. In other words, is there anything that we will have to pay and then be reimbursed on later?

Travel

D. McKnight,

Costs to be paid up front at school would likely only be those that are school related not ROTC related.

Assuming you are travelling from California to school in Maine......keep your receipts whether flying or driving. If driving keep your hotel receipts too. I believe 4 yr NROTC scholarship recipients, like 4 yr AROTC scholarship recipients are entitled to travel pay for your first travel to campus. It is based on Joint Travel Regulations which apply to NROTC and AROTC.

You will have to fill out the DD Forms provided by your NROTC unit after you arrive on campus.

Thanks for the advice. Since the school picks up the room & board for those on scholarship, are there any other school related costs to expect?

The main thing will be first semester books. You will need to buy those before class starts and won't receive the book allowance for a month or so.

As an aside, check out Amazon for text books. You son can save a lot of money compared to buying from the campus book store. Usually there will be some books you have to get at the book store. For others, we have found Amzaon will often have books for 10% to 50% of the campus book store price.

College Stuff to Buy

D. McKnight,

If you are going to college across the country....pack light and don't buy much. You will have to store it over the summer or borrow garage space from a friend or relative.

When we drove to California with our DD we bought a lamp, ironing board, desk lamp, fan, and little things to make the dorm home like hooks for hanging up a wet towel or keys in California. We rented the frig but if you have a place to store it over the summer it is cheaper to buy if you can use it for two years.

You can buy it online and schedule for pick up at any big box store...work it out with your roommate.

If flying you may have to buy towels, sheets, ..... and even more items.

Have fun on your adventure!
