Any EA denials?

I’ve been tracking the two waves of EA appointments so far, but I haven’t seen anyone post an academy denial yet. Has anyone been denied? Do you know why you/DD/DS was/were denied?

Do all of the denials come out on the same day?

I submitted my application probably dead last on the last day of EA and I haven’t heard anything yet. Some people in the Dec. 3 appointment group applied the last day of EA. I would’ve expected to hear something by this point.

In the past, the denials and the rollovers to Regular Admissions usually happen near the deadline given for EA decisions. But that doesn't mean there won't be more acceptances. There is still a lot of time.

This is a pretty good post from this morning:

Of those that have already been accepted, and communicated with, I wonder what the differentiating factor is? Two weeks ago it seemed to be folks that had been contacted by their coach who had recruited them. Major? Or maybe they had less "complex" files to review?

My question would be outside of recruited athletes (I had a son last year who was a recruit who heard before Thanksgiving and one this year who is not a recruit) in what order are EAs reviewed? I asked before in a chat if anybody had been accepted without SAT scores, and somebody replied they had an appointment and did not submit test scores and were not a recruited athlete. I could see ok coaches get x number of recruits to prioritize based on sport, then we go everybody over a 1500 etc. Or everybody who went to AIM, something. But looking at this closely for 2 years in a row, I can't get my arms around the logic, Hurry up and wait is the order of the day. Congrats to all who have heard.

That order certainly makes sense, it sounds like the most efficient way of getting though the applications.

I’ve heard from lots of people about the processes from past years, and it seems they do stuff a bit different every go round.

Thank you all for your support. The anticipation is getting to me.

The Admissions Officer's have said that they start evaluating packages in the order they were submitted. But that doesn't mean they make final decisions in the order they are evaluated. It may change each year a bit, but it seems like if they evaluate somebody and they are an absolute "yes" (or possibly an absolute "no"), then they probably give the decision. If they are a strong applicant, but the committee wants to go through more applications in order to compare them to others first, then they probably wait. Then, once they get through all the EA applicants, they can decide how many of the applicants they want to admit for EA, how many they want to deny, and how many they want to move to the Regular Admission pile in order to compare them with those applicants.

I'm guessing that "absolute no's" don't hear until the very end. In some of the conference calls, they described folks that have included the USNA or USAFA essay in with their application. Oops. I'm sure other folks apply and are not even in the competitive range. I saw something like 3,000 apply, but only 800 are actually reviewed as qualified. (For my job, I'll have a posting out there and it's amazing the amount of folks that didn't even read the announcement but still apply.) Nevertheless, I think the forum is trying to crack the code of what makes someone an absolute yes (and have been notified) versus everyone else... recruited athlete, high level of expressed interest/contact, major, etc? By design/privacy, those that have announced their appointment on this forum haven't given enough information to make sense of it for those still waiting to hear.

Just regarding denials, from what I have seen, these often come out in batches. Towards the end of the cycle. And if you have been deferred you probably won’t know until December 23rd. There are also more appointments that will come out then too so don’t despair yet!

Putting a class together is much more art than science. They need regional diversity, demographic diversity, socio-economic diversity, a variety of athletes, musicians, rough quotas for majors, prior enlisted, brainiacs and charismatic leaders. They start by going through the EA apps and grabbing all the no-doubt rockstars, the recruited athletes, any obvious keepers regardless of class composition. With that central core assembled, the tent pole up, they start filling in the rest of the gaps with a bunch of CGAS grads, the deferred EAs and the RA folks. A recent example: for the class of 2025 they offered 246 acceptances to the 747 EA applicants, vs 147 to the 1321 RA folks in a year with a 285 class size goal. I'm not sure if the deferred EAs were counted in that RA number, but overall it's about a 33% acceptance in EA and about 10% in RA. But if you read prior year acceptance threads you'll see the acceptances coming in regular waves and a lot of the deferrals and rejections occuring near the end of the EA period.

Let me be clear about a couple things: prior year numbers don't guarantee future process, as they try different things from time to time. EA being deferred to RA is a relatively new thing, for example. Next, there's no true secret for what it takes to get accepted because from year to year you get a different cast of Obvious Keepers in EA which leaves a different set of gaps to fill in RA each spring. You might be looking for a definition of Obvious Keeper, but that'll vary from year to year based on who else is applying. If you think you're an attractive candidate and your ducks line up by October, the numbers say to try for EA. If you need to wait for another quarter of grades or a winter sports captaincy or something, hold off. It's not the end of the world to go RA because that's where a lot of plebes come from.

TLDR: Don't try to be what they are looking for, present yourself with pride and enthusiasm. Live your best high school life, show them a record you stand behind, and then go finish your senior year with joy and optimism. The chips are going to fall on their own, so don't waste a lot of your remaining days with your friends fretting about this. Good luck.

EDIT: I had the CGAS in the wrong place above. I believe they are RA, in the spring.

My impression was that they went through them in the order received

My DS is wondering about the status of his app since he has not heard anything from anyone. Is it advisable to reach out at this point? DS applied on 10/8. He has completed DODMERB and is awaiting those results.

I would confirm all on his checklist on bears den. Make sure application complete ready for review box is checked under the STATUS section.

Everything has a checkmark that is supposed to be checked and his application says complete and ready for review.
